If you’re a space enthusiast you may know Balladonia as the site where debris from the US Skylab space station fell to the ground in 1975. The Skylab was the United States first, and only, space station that orbited for six years and eventually the entire thing plummeted back to earth. NASA’s ground controllers tried to adjust Skylab’s trajectory to 810 miles off the coast of Cape Town but what made it way through Earth’s atmosphere all landed in Western Australia, putting on the most spectacular lighting display for the rest of the country. Over a single property in Esperance, 24 pieces of Skylab were found.
Today, the only trace of its extraterritorial past can be found inside the Balladonia roadhouse where you’ll find a display of space debris and newspaper clippings.
You’ll also find enormous burgers as the roadhouse’s other claim to fame is its burgers that are big enough for two.
