If sharing a road with light aircraft, buses, tourists, dingoes, fishermen and the daily tide of shark loving waters sounds like a blast then 75 Mile Highway is the highway for you.
This mecca of 4W sand driving on Fraser Island is one stunning, adrenalin pumping coastal drive as you are on shifting sand with a tide that comes and goes, and where freshwater creeks can hit the beach and make everything very boggy. But, with the wild roaring ocean to one side of you and views of the rainforest to the other, 75 Mile Highway is never dull or boring.
Because you’re putting your foot down on sand.
Plus, driving this sand highway is the way to access some of the best places on Fraser Island, which is, by the way, the largest sand island in the world and a magical playground.
Low tide is best when the sand is hard and packed. You have to have your wits about you and make sure you understand how the tides work so you don’t get cut off and can’t make it back to your accommodation. Or friends. Police monitor the highway to keep the fools off but the roaming dingoes, hungry fishermen and small planes have a right to be there too.
The best time to go is during whale watching season between July to October.
