"Fort Herkimer Church was also a defensive structure during the American Revolutionary War, serving as a center for colonial militias and housing numerous contingents of troops. In June 1775, a liberty pole was erected at the church. The liberty pole was probably the first one raised in the state and probably the first in the country. During the raid of 1778, the church was a neighborhood refuge, and it served as a stronghold from which its defenders repulsed the Tory-Indian raiders of 1782. During the Revolution, the church included a swivel gun mounted on its tower as well as a palisade (stockade wall of logs) surrounding its exterior."

The Georgian-style mansion that was the home to courageous Revolutionary War hero, General Nicholas Herkimer. He completed construction of his mansion about 1764 in the Mohawk Valley frontier. General Herkimer's place in history was assured in 1777. Herkimer was en route to help defend Fort Stanwix when he and his men were ambushed by British-allied Loyalists and Iroquois at Oriskany.
Not open to the public
"During the Revolutionary War the church was used to send signals on troops movements though the valley to Herkimer on the other side of the river. It was these messages that Molly Brant intercepted and went to tell her brother Joseph Brant for the massacre at the Battle of Oriskany."
