The Battle of Oriskany is the bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War that you might have never heard of. During the siege of Fort Stanwix; General Herkimer led a relief column to assist the fort. They were ambushed by Joseph Brant, leading a group of Iroquois and Loyalists.
Herkimer was wounded but still led his troops by sitting next to a tree. The battle continued for hours and did not end until a thunderstorm hit the area.
The Loyalist lost 15% of their troops. The Patriots lost 50% of their forces. Although, the British claimed victory because they stopped the relief column. They lost a lot of Native American support. But during the battle, the soliders at Fort Stanwix raided the empty British camp. When the Loyalist returned from Oriskany, they found no supplies.
