Seemed like a good idea at the time. Although we tried each others' patience, I sort of enjoyed having him along. Note to self, include more swim time and avoid holiday weekends at all cost.

And we're off again.
Signs on US36 said it was closed.
As luck would have it, the skies opened up just before we arrived. Caden enjoyed a few things but was more interested in getting to the motel.
That's right, a rest area. It is Kansas.
FINALLY! A little bit longer of a day than I had planned. Caden was more interested in swimming than eating.
Wildlife Loop Road Scenic Byway
Rain when we went through. Saw a few buffalo and wild burros but not as many as last year.
Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway
Caden was getting eager to swim. A couple of nice waterfalls along the way. I imagine it would be pretty in the fall.
In between rain showers, we made it and found time to walk around. Need to comeback without Caden and go through the WWII museum.
Okay, I drove 15 miles down dirt roads to get there. It is private property and a good chance to test your four wheel drive. One of those places I'm glad I visited but not sure I'll make a trek back.
Storms were starting to move in and tornado was spotted about 20 miles south. Another one of those places I'm glad I saw but... Storms moving in, so we had to move on.
Looked like it was fairly new.
Talk about in the middle of nowhere. The ranger was very helpful and took a lot of time to talk with us. Caden got his first junior ranger badge here. Glad we stopped.
The museum in the archway was interesting. I went a little out of our way to visit since we missed this last year.
Missed it. Website hours said it was closed, but learned it was open later.
Caden seemed to enjoy himself until he overheard someone use the word tornado.
It was a dark and stormy night - really!
Nice stop. Hasn't changed any since last year.
Nice but some ominous clouds had Caden worried about tornadoes. Ranger badge #3.
Passed through but what an evening. We saw our first and only elk. Impressive! We would return a few days later for Caden and I to go down into the cave. And Ranger badge #6.
