- In 1887, Harry Alonzo Longabaugh was caught stealing a gun, horse, and saddle from a Sundance, Wyoming ranch. While in jail for the crime, he took on the name the “Sundance Kid.
- Robert Redford portrayed Harry Longabaugh in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a 1969 American Western film that won several acacemy awards.
- Robert Redford later named his Sundance Ski Resort near Provo, Utah, and the Sundance Film Festival after this character.
- Sundance is directly south of the Bear Lodge Mountains, part of the Black Hills National Forest.
- Devils Tower National Monument, a 1,267-feet high igneous rock intrusion or laccolith in the Bear Lodge Mountains, is a short drive north of Sundance. It is the first United States National Monument.
