In 1887, Harry Alonzo Longabaugh was caught stealing a gun, horse, and saddle from a Sundance, Wyoming ranch. While in jail for the crime, he took on the name the “Sundance Kid.
Robert Redford portrayed Harry Longabaugh in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a 1969 American Western film that won several acacemy awards.
Robert Redford later named his Sundance Ski Resort near Provo, Utah, and the Sundance Film Festival after this character.
Sundance is directly south of the Bear Lodge Mountains, part of the Black Hills National Forest.
Devils Tower National Monument, a 1,267-feet high igneous rock intrusion or laccolith in the Bear Lodge Mountains, is a short drive north of Sundance. It is the first United States National Monument.
