“U.S.'s 1st concrete-steel composite arch bridge”
The Mike O'Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, the key component to the Hoover Dam Bypass project, was the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States, and it incorporates the widest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. Opened on October 19, 2010, this four-lane highway bridge provides a crossing of the Colorado River for U.S. Route 93, linking Nevada with Arizona about 1,600 feet (about 500 meters) downstream from the Hoover Dam. This bridge is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. At 840 feet (260 meters) above the Colorado River, this bridge is the second-highest in the United States, following the Royal Gorge Bridge. Built as part of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project, which was successfully completed within budget at a cost of $240 million, the bridge portion cost $114 million (2010 prices). The walkway is accessible from the Nevada side, proceed as if you are driving to the Hoover Dam, and the walking path turn off is clearly marked, with free parking and portable toilets.
Reviews
Stood on the bridge in Oct 2014.... it was just phenomenal! How the hell did they build this thing, so high up and over such a huge valley. Definitely one of the most impressive feat of engineering in the modern era...
The bridge has a walkway for tourists, and provides an incredible view the Hoover Dam. The tiny walk up from the parking area to the bridge has tons of historical information, and also a great visual documentation of how the bridge was built.
Definitely stop here!
We took the tour and it was really amazing to look from inside out in the "Canyon"!!! If you stand still for a few seconds you can feel the Bridge moving =)
Don't wear a hat...
Great view! Free parking, even enough space for a RV. You need to go there.
The bridge was still being built when I last visited the hoover dam but my god it looked epic! One hell of a project.
March 2021-drove across bypass bridge in RV going west ( in left lane due to winds ) but could NOT see the dam. Darn!
As someone who isn't too fond of heights, I forced myself to walk on this thing...and didn't regret it. The views of the dam are INCREDIBLE.
Easy little parking lot, you just need to walk up a few steps to get to the bridge.
Cool bridge. Very high
