“Outdoors & Recreation in Fort Payne, AL”
Little River is unique because it flows for most of its length atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. Forested uplands, waterfalls, canyon rims and bluffs, pools, boulders, and sandstone cliffs offer settings for a variety of recreational activities. Natural resources and cultural heritage come together to tell the story of the Preserve, a special place in the Southern Appalachians.

This is a hidden gem in Northern Alabama. The visitor center is one of the best in the entire National Park system, and the rangers and volunteers are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. My daughter enjoyed the Junior Ranger program. There are regular events and ranger programs there, well worth attending--my daughter learned how to knapp flint arrowheads one afternoon. The driving tour will take you a couple of hours, but it will give you some of the best views of anywhere in Alabama.
We had a great time here! The visitors’ center is new and impressive, and our kids got star treatment from the rangers. We ended up taking about a four-mile round trip hike, seeing both the large falls and Martha’s Falls (where we swam a bit). Be sure to check for ticks when you get back from hiking!
Great place to spend a few hours.
Certainly worth the stop!
I took the scenic drive, it took me about two hours to stop and see everything. It was a very nice drive. Not the best scenic view in the country but definitely better than I expected.
An outstanding stop of natural beauty! We used it as a break from the car and to stretch our legs. Getting into the water was refreshing!
oh my god, this road is simply amazing! it was the best small road we took from Minnesota to Florida.
