Historic Treasure

Our Take

If you’re looking for that essential Western experience in Texas, you’ll find it at the Fort Worth Stockyards. It has a rich history, but today it’s mostly fun kitsch. You’ll find free shows here, including a cattle herd where cows are run down the street, and some paid experiences. Kids will enjoy the horse-powered carousel and the petting zoo. This is also a great spot for souvenir shopping.

“shopping and twice-daily cattle drives!”

Fort Worth is where the West begins, and nothing embodies Western heritage better than the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. From the original brick walkways to the wooden corrals, every inch of the Stockyards tells the true history of Texas’s famous livestock industry. The Fort Worth Stockyards is a historic district that is located in Fort Worth, Texas, north of the central business district. The 98-acre (40 ha) district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District in 1976. They are a former livestock market which operated under various owners from 1866. The Fort Worth Herd is the world's only twice daily cattle drive, held every day at 11:30 AM & 4:00 PM in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

We love stopping here for a lunch and to watch the daily cattle drive when we time it right. Its a great place to wander around and stretch legs for an hour or so before hopping back in the car. We loved the BBQ!

This isn’t just another stockyard — this is the one that brought fame and recognition to Fort Worth. This historic district allows you to get to know and experience the fantastic Wild, Wild West. If you want to see cattle drives, or maybe an old-fashioned gun fight, this is the place to visit.

The Fort Worth Stockyards is a National Historic District where you'll find shopping, dining, dancing, hotels, entertainment, special events, and plenty of fun activities to keep you busy.

If you have youngsters with you, a circle through the Cowtown Cattlepen Maze or a fun ride on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad is always a good idea.

Admission to the Fort Worth Stockyards is free. However, different attractions charge entry fees and have specific hours of operation. A visit here is one of the absolute best things to do in Fort Worth.

While not a "working" cattle drive, it's still fascinating to watch very large cattle walking down the street just a few feet away from the crowd. Also, the shops and restaurants were definitely worth walking through.
