This campground was recommended to us by Lackland AFB as they were full and this is close to them. This place is about 20 minutes from LAFB and 35 min from San Antonio. The do offer a 20% military discount which was a huge bonus.
Campground has FHU, a cement pad for the picnic table, a small store, ice and propane. There is no fire pit provided on most sites, but we did see people using fire pans. There also seems to be cabins for rent. There was a laundry room that looked very new. (Unlike the picnic tables which were falling apart). There are also some remote sites (that don't even show on their map) down by the river. I am sure this might be a good spot for fishing and kayaking. *This lower area gets very muddy...we were here after a rain.*
Unfortunately, it looks like there are quite a few people living here full time. (Especially, the sites down by the river.) These sites were not well maintained and looked actually somewhat sketchy. While there are many rules regarding no permanent structures and maintaining the "look" of your site, I am thinking many people are exempt from the rules.
This could be a really nice campground if they REALLY cleaned it up. People were friendly enough & it was nice & quiet... Just didn't feel "comfortable" here.

I found this place by accident -- I saw the sign on the road and followed the bread crumbs. It's kind of tucked away. It is a hidden gem! I showed up in the office and the owner's daughter was able to get me into a space right away. The sites aren't like most places, where you are one atop another -- they are a really good size. I didn't feel crowded at all. I was only going to stay one night, but I liked it so much that I wound up staying ten nights total. There wasn't a fire pit at my site, but I mentioned that I'd like to have a campfire and the lady in the office had a fire ring delivered within an hour. There was firewood for sale at the office.
Points to consider about this place:
-- It is out of the way/off the beaten path.
-- It is really close to San Antonio, but not in SA.
-- Super clean bath house and laundry facility.
-- There is some noise from the dog rescue next door. I had my air conditioner running the whole time and only heard them when I was outside. I couldn't enjoy my campfire in silence, and that was kind of annoying.
-- There is a huge area for hiking down the hill by the river. I didn't fish, but I did do a lot of hiking in the woods and spend a bunch of time meditating by the water. I really loved it.

Stayed at park for 6 days. Graduate at Lackland AFB. Took about 15 minutes to get to the visitors center. Beautiful land if you choose to wander about. River runs through it. Some of the sites are cluttered due to long term camps. They all work. Mostly RR. So place is empty during day. Very nice owners. They have cow cookies to feed his small herd in the adjoining pasture. Very friendly cows.

A nice place to stay with a few things to consider. They are right next to a very large dog rescue organization and you will hear the dogs. If that bothers you, stay away. The staff were all very nice, friendly, and professional. The facilities were in good condition and they have some very nice areas to walk and fish.
One thing to note is they high-lighted it on the rules: NO FIREARMS in the park. So if you travel with a firearm, they don't want you staying with them. Since I often do, I will respect their wishes and look elsewhere when in the area.
