“along the banks of Piedra River”
The Lower Piedra Campground is just north of U.S. Highway 160 on the west side of the Piedra River, about 18 miles east of Bayfield and 25 miles west of Pagosa Springs. It is about a half mile up Forest Rd. 621 on the west side of the river (not to be confused with the First Fork Road on the east side of the river). We stayed here May 5, 2019. We have stayed here before, campground is along the Piedra River. Just 17 sites, last night only 5 or 6 were occupied. CG offers clean vault toilets, water spigot, and a dumpster. Sites are combo of backins and pull through. Rate is $22, we have senior pass, so just $11 for us. You can now stay 28 nights per the sign at check-in kiosk. Good for sleeping, running River to listen to. But there's a early sunset and a late sunrise because of the configuration of the valley. No host on site, nearby Ute CG host drops by daily, 1 mile dirt road to access site

Nice forest CG along the Piedra river. Several sites on the river. 3 small loops. Not big rig friendly. Only water is a hand pump. Vault toilets (didnt use). Sites nicely spaced with great evergreen smell. Narrow 1 lane dirt road in for 1 mile. Site 10 shaded but enough sun for solar to charge batts. No verizon at all.

Narrow road coming in near a small junkyard. Don’t let that first impression stop you from driving in the one mile to a great small campground. Only 15 campsite with 4 on the river, all them are nice sites but not good for big rigs. Very clean pit toilets and sites with metal fire pits. A hand pump for water in the center of the campground. Very quiet sites in sites shaded by mature ponderosa pines. Talked to a ranger and he said he never saw all sites occupied in 5 years possibly because there is BLM land nearby. Lots of rafting in the river and a small sulfur pond very close by to swim in. Seniors pay half price. Only bad thing I can think of is no cellular service at all because of high cliffs on both side.
