“14 sites above the West Dolores River”
Campgrounds still open between September and May have no services (water, electric, trash pick up or rest rooms). Please keep them clean and pack it out. Thanks! Two miles northeast of Dunton, Burro Bridge is one of three campgrounds along the West Dolores Road (Forest Rd. 535), which branches north from Colorado Highway 145 about 13 miles northeast of Dolores. The campground has 14 sites above the West Dolores River with horse corrals and easy acces to the Lizard Head Wilderness, but not easy access to the water. The road follows the West Dolores River almost to its headwaters in the Lizard Head Wilderness. Side roads lead into the backcountry. After 32 miles, the road rejoins the highway 6 miles north of Rico. The road has a gravel surface, but the last 6 miles are steep, narrow, and not recommended for trailers.

Ratings Summary
A small campground. Best for tenters. Well graded dirt road, coming from Dolores. (on West Dolores Road (Forest Rd. 535) about 13 miles northeast of Dolores)Coming from Rico the road is narrow, rough and winding. Trailers not permitted. Trailhead to Navajo Lake just a mile away. There is a trail to a very sulpherous hot spring just four miles away. Good trout fishing, but no river access at campground. There are 15 sites, with 2 of them are reserved for people with horses. Beautiful aspens, firs and pines. An abundance of wildflowers. Some potable water (well is old and pump small, so the water is limited), 3 pit toilets, one labeled for women. A treat. . No dumpster, you have to take your trash out with you. I loved this campground. It was full only Fourth of July weekend. Otherwise usually 4-5 sites were full. Most sites with good separation. Two open ones that were good for solar use. No cell phone or wi-fi reception.

We stayed at this campground after not finding anything available nearby at Mavreeso and West Dolores. Nice quiet campground, potable water and super clean bathrooms. Site 1 is closest to the river. The camp host was very hospitable. There is no trash service at this campground so be sure to pack it out. The stars at night are amazing! Def look forward to staying here again.
