“Visit the Sacred Hills!”

Mato Paha or "Bear Mountain" is the Lakota name given to this site. To the Cheyenne, it is "Noahvose." This geological formation is one of several intrusions of igneous rock in the Black Hills that formed millions of years ago. The mountain is sacred to many American Indian tribes who come here to hold religious ceremonies. Please be respectful of worshippers and their religious practices. Many American Indians see Bear Butte as a place where the creator has chosen to communicate with them through visions and prayer. During your visit, you will see colorful pieces of cloth and small bundles or pouches hanging from the trees. These prayer cloths and tobacco ties represent the prayers offered by individuals during their worship. Please respect these offerings and leave them undisturbed.

This is a nice little park. One of the few South Dakota parks that is nearly free $11.61 or iif the host isn't using the spot you can pay $15.83 for electric.

No services. I did see a water spigot and they do have vault toilets.

Road in is gravel but smooth. Very quiet though can be windy.

Verizon was solid 3-4bars. 15.50/14.29 mbps down/up without a booster. Got 17.52/12.42 mbps down/up with a WeBoost 4G.

A nice little park with a great view of Bear Butte and the Black Hills in the distance. Not too far out of Sturgis for when you need to stock up on supplies. The pictures from previous posters do the park justice, nicely spaced sites (not huge but certainly adequate) and most sites are big enough for bigger rigs. The roads getting here are good. There is a water spigot for drinking water but no dump station or electric unless you're lucky enough to score the campground host site. Vault toilets. There are platforms for fishing, right from the campground and probably two others on road coming in. The oddest thing is the price, currently $11.67, a price that reflects tax which I rarely encounter. It makes for awkward payment if you're paying with cash. The other strange thing, if I am interpreting the sign properly, is it appears you have to re-register each day so again, have lots of change ready if you plan on paying with cash. If you plan to hike Bear Butte, please be respectful, it is a sacred site to many. Plan your hike on a COOL day and take lots of water.

Our site was close to the parking lot that all the fisher-persons would park to do their fishing. The sites were not very well kept. None have been mowed for quite some time. Our site was ok as far as being level. Long enough for our 40' plus toad. Good for going to Sturgis/Deadwood areas. Windy.

This campground is cute & quiet! There are15 spots, one being the host spot that was available to stay at & had electric hook ups. For a state park, the sites are well spaced. Each site has a nice metal picnic table and fire ring. Some sites also have a shade awning over the picnic table. Sites are first come first serve and are $11.67/night. There are 2 vault toilets which were extremely clean during my stay. There is a drinking water spigot near the bathrooms as well as trash services. Beautiful lake you can walk completely around. Seems like a good spot to go fishing/kayaking/SUP/boating. As you pull onto the dirt road, you’ll pass a first small campground area which is mainly for tents. If you continue down the dirt road another 1/4 mile, you’ll come across the larger campground that accommodates vans/trailers/RVs. They are all back in sites, no pull through. You also do not need to pay the $8 day pass fee to enter into the campground so that was nice. Park trucks drove through daily. Spoke to Fred, extremely nice and helpful. Town is about 10 minutes away if you need to restock on anything.

We needed someplace to stay north of Rapid City and chose Bear Butte. Sites are spacious, not at all crowded, great views of the butte and on a small lake. We took the vacant camp host site because it had electric and water - $15.91/ nite. Other sites are $11/nite. Location is interesting because of its proximity to Sturgis. Right up the road is the Full Throttle Saloon - even for non motorcycle enthusiasts this place is a must see! You won't be sorry. There are also bison roaming the hills close to the Bear Butte education center across the main road. If you like history don't forget to check it out.

I have given 4 stars only because there is only a vault toilet, though it was very clean. We were here in mid-May, so early in the season. This is a rather small grassy campground. There are a few trees. Most sites have a shade awning. There is not water or electricity, except for the host site. The campground is along an unpaved secondary road. We did not experience dust or noise. Please make sure to climb Bear Butte. The woman at the visitor's center said it would take less than an hour to hike up. Well, it took us 2 hours. Of course, my husband stopped to take pictures every 2 feet. I highly recommend hiking sticks. The route is very rocky -- large & small -- in places & has quite a drop off in places. We would have stayed longer but we had an opportunity to get a site in Custer SP. For all the hype, Sturgis ain't much. From pictures you can see that it's a hoppin place during the August Rally but the place is small & not much to recommend it.
