“tall, willowy cottonwood trees provide shade & serenity”
Think of Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site as an oasis. Its tall, willowy cottonwood trees provide shade and serenity. Each campsite is clothed with a variety of trees and other plants to give you that private, secluded feeling. The park borders the beautiful John Day River and is surrounded on all sides by some of Oregon's most pristine wilderness areas. You're as likely to have wildlife neighbors as human ones: the majestic Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer are frequent visitors. You can experience the thrill of seeing steelhead rush upriver to spawn. The park lies in the shadow of the Strawberry Mountain Range just a short drive away.

Our site was on the river side of the park so we didn't notice the highway noise so much. Our site was very private with hedges on all sides and so much property to enjoy, we wished we had brought the whole family. The grounds and facilities were super clean and accented nicely with flowers, bushes and lots of shade trees. Most people would love to have yards as nice as this. The hosts did a excellent job of keeping this in great condition. Now if they could have just kept the rain away ....

The campground is near John Day, OR which is the location of the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site. The Site offers an interesting tour of the home and business of a Chinese doctor and a Chinese businessman who lived here in the late 1800's during the Oregon gold rush. There is information and a video available on the Oregon Public Broadcasting web site. http://www.opb.org/television/programs/oregonexperience/segment/kam-wah-chung/
The campground has many large trees and a river flows by several of the campsites. It is a very nice setting with good spacing between sites.
There is road noise from highway 26 which is directly beside the campground.

We planned on camping up the river near Service Creek, but it was a hot and somewhat muggy day, so we sought shade. This is a nice, shady, clean and convenient place just outside John Day.
Lush (lawn, canopy of trees, etc.) and shaded, this was just the ticket. Great AT&T service (after no service for prior 80 miles) was welcome. We got some thunder showers, but then it cleared up nicely and cooled off.
Our site was near the entrance (would not be our first choice) but we found the campground very quiet and it's nice to be able to fill our water, take a shower, etc.

Beautiful park, lots of grass and trees. Interior roads are paved as are the sites. W/E with a dump station on site, utilities are easy to reach from the back-in sites. The park is between John Day and Mt.Vernon on Hwy. 26. We are used to traffic noise, Hwy. 26 is not that busy, so noise was not an issue. Our site #27 was perfect for satellite reception with clear path due south through the trees. This is a first come, first served park, we arrived around noon and had plenty of choices. Camp hosts on site are friendly. I would give the place a 5 star but for the lack of sewer hook-up at each site instead of one dump station. Good stop to go see John Day Fossil Beds Nat'l Monument and Painted Hills.

We have stayed her twice now. It is a great little park if you are passing through and need a place for a night.
Very clean and well maintained. Staff are friendly and available if you need anything.
Downfall are mosquitos depending on time of year that you visit. Late June was not bad, but late July/ early August you cannot even leave your trailer.
You do get some highway noise, but not bad. We did have a rude awakening around midnight with a guest yelling and letting of fireworks, but it was quickly taken care of by staff with no further issue.
Great cell and 4g coverage with Verizon.

Campsite: #25 was level
Price: $26 electrical
Dump Station: Yes
Altitude: 2875 ft
Camp Host: Didn't meet
Ease of Access: Very easy, our 28 ft travel trailer fit with room to spare. Easily circled campground once to find a space.
Weather: Days sunny low 80's nights upper 50's
Noise: Site #25 backed up to hwy 26; daytime passing vehicle noise could be loud. Night vehicle noise wasn't an issue.
Activities: Geocaching cache in the park, a couple within one mile. John Day Fossil Monument 30 minute drive away.
Wife and I enjoyed the campground, it was park like and very green due to water sprinklers. Well maintained grounds and the hot showers were free. Showers had one button operation which ran for 2 minutes per press. We walked along the river and found the mosquitoes, thank goodness for mosquito repellent.

We were happy to snag a spot for our 32’ class A and loved how large the sites were. Plenty of yard area for every site. The Day Use area is beautiful with lots of trees, grass and tables for remote working. There are two apple trees in the Day Use area that my toddler loved visiting and finding ready-to-eat apples on the ground.
The $34 rate is the non-resident rate. We had 50-amp and water hookups and the dump station was close by. We enjoyed biking the trail along the river and a bit of swimming. Lots of crawfish that you can see through the clear water.
The park staff were friendly and let me get a package delivered to the office during our stay!

This is one of those manicured full hook-up camps with grass and nice landscaping. Pleasant surroundings. You are next to the creek but can't really see it without taking a walk. The downside is you are right next to the highway so road noise could be a problem.

Clyde Holliday is a beautifully manicured, parklike campground. It really is stunning from the landscaping to the river walk leaving the campground. The hosts are pleasant and helpful. Bathrooms and showers are clean and the water is warm. The camp itself scores a 5 but I give 4 stars because of a little road noise (which can't be helped and isn't overpowering) and a 5 to me needs more hiking options right from camp. Could be I didn't spend enough time to discover all that it has to offer. The John Day River valley itself is an intriguing place for exploration.
