Homolovi State Park Campground

Loved my stay here! Was a very peaceful, restful stop! It was not over crowded and the rangers were very friendly. I could not get the shower to lock, but I felt safe, which was important being a female traveling alone. Pet friendly and loved the open range. Made for great sunsets and awesome view of the stars!

I really enjoyed staying overnight here. For me, being part of the open range seemed to spark the imagination of "yester-years". The park has two areas of Hopi Indian ruins to see. There are some walking trails perhaps a bit too soft sandy for trail bikes but they are allowed if you want. There is a park office where staff was very informative and helpful. Don't expect a lot of amenities other than electric, water, a clean campground with clean showers and restrooms. My wife would have preferred more of a traditional RV Park. I felt this was a worthwhile stop, especially if you enjoy learning or expanding Indian history.

Price was $7.00 per carload, but included in the camping fee if you stay at the park. Two ruins, each had over 1,000 rooms. Sounds incredible, because it is. I have never, ever seen so much pottery just laying around. Not much is left of the house, but plenty of pottery. Check their website for a great MP3 audio self tour for the Homolovi II site. Rangers were incredibly nice.

Entrance to the state park is included in the campground fee, so we found it very inexpensive to stay here. Sites had water and electricity or nothing. Rangers and camp host were very nice and helpful. Bathrooms appeared very nice. Not any other amenities in campground.

Excellent place to stay. You are basically camping on a desert plain. The sites are paved, with enough room for your rig and your toad. You can see for miles from your motor home window. We are self contained, so only needed electric. This was the perfect choice of campground for us. OTA television yielded 26 stations. Verizon signal is a very strong 4G...no problem getting on line.

Only stayed one night as it was just a stopover. Very friendly and helpful campground host when I was there in March 2016. I am not sure how many special programs the park runs, but when I was there, they had a local potter giving a pottery talk/demonstration outside the visitor's center. Good TV coverage with just antennae.

The sites are very good but little in the way of privacy other than spacing. When I was there, the campground was far from full so everyone had plenty of room.

You have to go to Winslow, AZ to just see Standing at the Corner. Also other historic sights in town.

Signs everywhere indicate that rattlers can and will eat your children if you stay here, but we're headed out tomorrow after staying for the work week and, sadly, all of my kids are completely rattler venom-free.

On the other hand, a tornado warning came through a couple of days ago. We got a notification on our phones, I guess AT&T has some sort of GPS-powered warning system. There isn't much in the way of "shelter" here, like most campgrounds, but I called the ranger (who had no idea there was a tornado warning) and he said to hunker down in the showers until it all blew over. Which it did, with no tornado, but high winds shredded our awning up.

Anyway, I think it should be noted how wonderful the showers are here. They're personal, for one. You go into a very clean, tiled room and get to lock the door behind you. Always nice. And they're free. And hot. And not timed.

Not sure what the draw to Winslow is, other than the song, but there was a hotel there with very expensive, eclectic dishes and the Lady and I enjoyed that quite a bit. I guess they have the two largest pieces of the World Trade Center on display somewhere, too. Seemed like a strange thing to have, but no stranger than that bridge in Havasu...

At a mean age of 35, though, I do believe we were the youngest people (aside from our kids) within 100 miles of Winslow and Homolovi.

On a double positive, the sunsets here were epic and though you can see the lights of Winslow off in the distance, the skies were dark enough to catch a few shooters.

AT&T was only good for calls, but Verizon was fast enough to stream video and work my soul away.

We showed up without reservations but had plenty of open spots to choose from. There is a mixture of tent, back in and pull through spots. There are roomy, private showers. The camp hosts were very friendly and even brought our kids bubbles to play with. We stayed in spot 47 which is on the road that's slightly elevated so you can see down towards the rest of the campground & a short walk to the bathrooms and showers. The spot had a fire ring, picnic table, tree and water/electric hookup. The dump station is near the entrance to the campground, as are trash dumpsters. Each site is nicely spaced from its neighbor. But there is hardly any vegetation, which is the norm for the park as a whole The road into the state park is very long, with many filled in cracks. If you venture to the ruins and/or the visitor center, expect a bumpy ride as many of those cracks are not filled in. It's located close to Winslow and about a half hour drive to the Meteor Crater.

The campground is far enough from the freeway to avoid all but the loudest truck noise. When we checked in with the rangers, they suggested several sights to see in the park. We got there a little late to see the main archeology site, but the one closest to the campground was fascinating. There is also a very small cemetery that is all that remains of an early Mormon settlement.
The campground was well maintained with clean restrooms and showers. We choose space 12 after looking at Google earth. It's a pull through at the top of the hill and is very level. Not all the spaces are. Spaces are water and electric. A dump station is on the road out of the campground.
The only thing that needs improvement is the road from the visitor's center to the campground. It has some serious cracks in the pavement.
We would definitely stay there again.

We had our pick of sites in January. Only camp hosts were there when we arrived. Showers were hot and bathroom was clean. The ruins are really neat to see as well. I would for sure recommend this time of year. Probably feels pretty crowded ib the summer.
