Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area

This was my first trip to Florida in the Airstream and I was trying to stay close to Daytona to see a friend. I chose this recreation area knowing nothing about it. I ended up loving it for the simple fact that you could hear the ocean. The campground sits atop a bluff overlooking the Atlantic. There is a walkway down to the beach, and a overlook next to my campsite. The campsites were sand and each had a picnic table and a fire ring. The restrooms were new and clean. The only drawback is that it very tight to back in your rig. This may be because I was fairly new at it. There were very large trailers and fifth wheels there. Despite that I loved the atmosphere and tranquility.

If you want to be right next to the ocean and don't mind being cheek by jowl with your neighbors then reserve a site early (yeah, like 11 months in advance) and you'll be happy.

If however, you "forgot" to get to making reservations until August-or at all- you will not be disappointed with the Intracoastal side. A newer area that was created when they dredged it is all new and sparkly and spacious AND the beach is a short walk away. If a site is unavailable when you first try keep trying and you can always see if there is one available if you drop by.

We are FL seniors so stay for half price but even at $30/night this place is well worth it.

Flagler Beach is a funky little beach town with great restaurants and lots to see. The beach is beautiful.

The sites are packed gravel, level with electric and water and have a small area with table and grill. Dog friendly with poop bag stations. There is a boat ramp just as you turn into the campground and dump station as you leave.

There are a number of nice walking trails and you can bike all over including to town. The sunsets are beautiful over the Intracoastal as are the sunrises over the ocean. There is a lot to see and do in the area.

The staff is very helpful and friendly. Bathrooms are immaculate, the showers are spacious ad have nice pressure and lots of hot water. There are two washers and dryers (I forget how much but not a lot) right outside the bathrooms.

We've wanted to stay here for years, and were overjoyed when we checked and snagged a last minute cancellation for an oceanfront spot!

A few days with the sound of the ocean out our front door (and the view!) was just what our souls needed.

The oceanside campground is very tightly packed, but not nearly as tight as some of the other oceanside RV parks in the area that charge 5x the price. You're allowed to back in or pull in straight to your sight (no angles or sidewards parking allowed), and the sites do afford a decent amount of separation and privacy.

Some dings on this park to be aware of:

1) Not all of the oceanfront sites have an ocean view. The groves at some sites are overgrown and block the view. From about site 13 to the middle bathhouse are the best.

2) If you're in a motorhome and using the dump station, do not, and I repeat do NOT hook up your toad. The turn around at the end of the beach row is not wide enough to make the turn if you're over about 30'. We had to unhitch to get turned around. In fact, if you can - hitch after leaving the park. Even the turn out of the camping gate to A1A is very tight, we almost didn't make it.

3) Be sure to follow the directions that come in your Reserve America confirmation. Absolutely use exit 284 off I-95. Do not follow your GPS if it recommends the exit to the south. The only way from there to reach the park is via a road with a 8'6" low clearance warning (that did not come up on ANY of our RV routing tools.). We made the mistake, and had to do a last minute scramble to get turned around.

The newer campground across the street is very nice as well. Not the same as oceanfront camping of course, but a very nice state park campground nonetheless.

Last time we camped here (11 years ago) we were beachside and our Airstream was pitted by the salt spray. This time we stayed in the riverside loop and really liked it.

Sites are close together beachside, and are nicely spaced out riverside. There are gravel pads that are raked by the camp hosts. There is also a nice walking trail that we used every morning.

The showers are clean and the water is hot. There is also 2 washers and dryers.

If we were to stay here again, we'd pick a spot in the Riverside Loop.

I would say any spot on the beach side is easily a 5 stars. Site 13 though - 37' deep by 45' wide. This site is easily 6 stars with the beach path on the driver side and the neighbor on the passenger side was 50' away giving us lots of space. We were there during bike week & spring break so the noise was higher than normal, but still an amazing place.

This state park is located on A1A, which runs mostly along the ocean in Florida, in the city of Flagler Beach. There are two campgrounds, ocean side and river side, we stayed in the river side. This is a relatively new campground and is quite nice, but very open, not many trees between campsites. Our campsite backed up to the intracoastal waterway, but we didn't have much of a water view, due to the vegetation. Still, we could see some boats passing by.

The riverside sites were mostly large, back-in sites. We had no problem backing in and we had a side area for our picnic table and fire ring. Sites are gravel with 50 amp and water, but we noticed a couple paved sites that had sewer. I'm not sure if they were handicapped or for hosts. The bathhouse was new and very clean, with 2 washer and dryers. We had no problem with satellite, I doubt anyone would, and we had good AT&T coverage.

The riverside has several tent sites that I thought were very nice, nestled in the trees with lots of shade and privacy. I'm not a tenter, but they looked more comfortable than in direct sunlight.

The park has a short hiking trail, lots of pavilions and a boat ramp. Everyone was very nice, we participated in the gopher tortoise day celebration and the night sky/full moon program. Both were enjoyable and educational.

We spent a little time on the beachside with friends and the campground there is very open with sites that are wide and shallow. You really can't see the ocean from the sites due to the dune and vegetation, but you have easy access (at the time we were there only one crossover was open because of hurricane damage) and you can sleep to the sound of the waves.

The town of Flagler Beach is small, but has some nice restaurants and a Sunday farmers market. Publix is fairly close if you need supplies.

If you have a big rig, a couple of warnings. While the campground loop is very easy, the entrance to the park is a little tight (coming from the north) and the gate is almost immediately after you turn in. Also, as noted in other reviews, when coming from the south, the GPS will try to route you through some areas with low trees. Opt to exit I95 at exit 284, no trees to worry about, but the right hand turn onto A1A is tight, our 5ver went over the curb.

We really enjoyed our stay and the surrounding area, so we will definitely visit again.

We loved it here and will definitely be back. Check-in was quick on the opposite side of the road from the beach side campground. You must call if arriving after dark to make arrangements.

Many of the beach accesses still had not been repaired from the 2017 hurricane season as of January 2018. The one in front of the bath house was open. However, the one just south and outside the park, was still closed. The only legal beach access for dogs required a 10 minute walk to right before the start of Ormond-by-the-Sea. That wasn't a problem for us though.

The campground hosts were great and were constantly keeping the bath houses clean, which was a big task with the wet weather we were having. The bathroom overall, and including individual stalls, was spacious on the beach side. The camp hosts said the newer campground facilities on the other side of the road were even nicer. I had no complaints about the beach side facilities. Good water pressure and plenty of hot water, even with someone showering at the same time.

We had site 29 and loved it. It was super spacious for our class B/campervan. Sites 13 to the center bath house currently have unobstructed views of the ocean. That will change with possible future hurricane damage and controlled vegetation burning.

As far as cell service. My iPhone showed 4G 2 bars and my husband’s iPhone showed 4 bars. We both had equally great experiences sending and uploading photos and small videos.

Internet speed test on my phone that showed 2 bars was 41.7 Mbps download and 5.1 Mbps upload.

Hard to book a site. Have stayed several times always on the beach side. Booked on the river side for the first time. Very pleased. Site 37 is one of the few, other than the tent sites, that have shade. Many local eateries no chain restaurants in Flagler, minutes away.
