Washita Battlefield National Historic Site

This is a joint office of the National Parks Services and U.S. Forest Service's Black Kettle National Grassland. This park is here to remember the surprise dawn attack on led by Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer against the Cheyenne village led by Peace Chief Black Kettle. The movie explaining the impact of this event is very powerful. It brought a new understanding of the actions that had taken place as well as their consequences. The National Park rangers and Forestry staff was absolutely amazing. They seem to see more group visits at this location however they pulled out all the stops when our family came in. The actual artifacts that are on display not only the ones you can’t touch but also the one they had out for you to interact with connect you to the events. They have a nature trail taking you out to additional artifacts. The tail was well worth the time. If you are a lover of all thing’s nature the insects on the trail are fantastic. Huge grasshoppers, ant colonies that you can see the work happening and lots of birds. Bring your camera. The U.S. Forest Services has a display on the benefits of burning. To see the three plots of wildflowers and the progression of healing after a fire it brings a new understanding of why they prescribe burns. Great Place and Great People! It is off the beaten path but well worth the journey.
