If a campground with riverside trails and bird watching opportunities sound appealing, but you don’t want to wander too far off of the beaten path, Bird Track Springs Campground may be the place for you. The short drive goes along river-side farm land and is less than one-half hour from I-84 on State Highway 244. It is a prime spot for a great get-away. Each of the 22 campsites is nestled beneath towering ponderosa pines in the Grande Ronde River valley. The Bird Track Campground map (182 KB) shows the location of each campsite. The campground is also located directly across from the Bird Track Springs Interpretive Site Trail where visitors may hike, bird watch, fish or wander along the river.

Tons of open spots on a Saturday morning when we checked it out so it would be easy to stop here when traveling through without a reservation. Probably better for trailers/RVs than tent camping as many of the sites are not maintained. There is a nature trail across the road from the campground. Should fit most sizes of rigs, too. We were just driving through (we had stayed at Red Bridge next door) and wanted to see what the campground looked like. We would stay here if passing through in the future.

We stayed here 9/7/20 enroute to Wallowa Lake. We had driven through last year and were impressed. The sites are widely spaced, and generally quite long and level. There are 2 very clean vault toilets, even after Labor Day weekend. We paid half the normal $5 fee with our senior pass. The camp is well maintained, they just don't mow the grass like the do at the state park.
Across the highway is the Grande Ronde River. The river access is all torn up, as part of a multi year project to naturalize the river, to try to get Salmon to return. Plans are to redo the nature trail that had been there.
People used to put in tubes up at Red Bridge and float down here. But boulders have been placed in the river and it is no longer advised.

Needed a place close to LaGrande for the night.
Older Forest Service campground.
Located about 5 miles west of I84 on State Hwy 244.
Campground is about 200 yards off the Hwy.
20+ sites.
Road noise: yes, starts early this time of year.
Clean: most of the sites are a little rough from use. Broken picnic tables at about 50% of the sites.
Vault toilet: pretty bad shape
Easy entry for smaller MH or TT. We are a 24' Forest River MH, no issues.
Sites are pretty level.
All in all for a quick stay like we needed it is just fine.
$5 a night.

Stayed 9/13-9/14 (2nights) while passing through Oregon. Was going to stay at the state park down the road, but once we pulled in we heard the lovely traffic. Headed up to this campground to get find something more relaxing and was happy to set up camp here.
Some road traffic, but nothing like the state park. Quite at night and felt comfortable. We paid $10 a night and loved getting to go across the road to hike around the river.
Felt like a lot of the other campers were just there for the night, but we always had 2-6 other sites occupied at night.
Host not on site, so the bathrooms were a little rough, but were nicer after he made his rounds.
Have AT&T, but has one tiny LTE bar and was able to text family. Not able to get internet to load if it was after 9am.
We would stay here again!

Nice place to camp if you want quiet seclusion. Nestled among beautiful trees and a nearby river. A couple of vault toilets that we didn’t use were the only amenities. Fair cell reception. Just a short jaunt from the interstate.
