“has guided ships into the Harbor Beach Harbor of Refuge since 1876”
A lighthouse has guided ships into the Harbor Beach Harbor of Refuge since 1876. The original light, a skeleton structure, was replaced in 1885 with the current Harbor Beach Lighthouse. Located one mile off shore, the lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation. The City of Harbor Beach and the Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society hope you will plan to visit the Harbor Beach Lighthouse in 2012. Last year’s inaugural season of tours proved to be a very popular attraction and the number of visitors is expected to increase dramatically in 2012. Guided tours will be conducted every Saturday from 10am to 1pm, June 23 through September 1, weather permitting. Tickets are $20 each and will include a boat ride (the lighthouse is located one mile off shore) to and from the lighthouse and a guided tour. Children 12 and older are also invited to attend. Due to architectural limitations, the facility is not handicapped accessible. The $20 ticket price also includes admission the the Grice Museum, located adjacent to the marina. The Grice Museum is an extensive collection of memorabilia relating to early life in the thumb, specifically Harbor Beach and includes the original Fresnel Lens from the Harbor Beach Lighthouse. This exciting opportunity was made possible by the transfer of the lighthouse to the City of Harbor Beach in 2010. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society is working with the Pte. Aux Barques Lighthouse and the Port Austin Reef Lighthouse in the local area, to promote all three of these historical structures. Tours will be available for all three. A special brochure has been produced and is distributed throughtout the state at various travel locations. A copy of the brochure can be downloaded here.
