A beautiful day and cold evening along the river, but lots of waterfowl activity. We had this remote park to ourselves. Would love to come back off season when we have more time.

River Road CG. Beautiful W&E sites along the river. Level concrete pads, fine concrete picnic tables, fire rings, grills. Grounds very well maintained. We came in late on a Thurs in June, took a site on the river with vacant sites on either side and watched a great blue heron do his evening fishing on the river bank. If every river site weren’t reserved for the weekend, I’d stay and enjoy another day or two. Sandy Beach CG obviously had recent flooding, but has been cleaned up and sites are available. Another great discovery on our wanderings!

Once we actually found the tent sites, it was great! Very clean bathrooms and showers. The only noise we heard throughout the night was nature. However there were some early birds rustling around to go fishing early in the morning. Not bad at all though. I would definitely recommend camping out here. The view was great!
Things to consider:
There isn’t any lighting past dark, get there during the light to set up tents. We didn’t have any cell service. The wind is pretty constant, so you might need help setting up your tent (team effort!) the site is difficult to find, very poor signage..

What a nice surprise! I never knew about all the state parks in Oklahoma and this might be the most unique. The campsites range from $25-34 for Rv sites. We chose a site right on the water. They have picnic tables, grill, water, electric, and a dump station on site. Reservations can be done online. This place is great for bird watching and the National Wildlife Refuge is nearby. The Great Salt Plains Reservoir is surrounded by several hiking trails with scenic views and the salt flats are vast with an area to dig for selenite crystals.
We were there June 15th through the 18 and it was hot, dry, and windy! But the birdwatching was excellent, we just set up our chairs by the water and saw cormorants, swallows, egrets, and white pelicans. If you walk up to the spillway, you can see turtles, carp, catfish, and snakes. We even saw a bobcat on a back road on our scooter ride. And we saw a road runner! That doesn’t happen every day.
This area is very unique with the salt flats, open water, and several other wildlife environments. I recommend taking the auto tour starting from the refuge on your way to the selenite digging area. I feel like it is Oklahoma’s version of the Everglades. Since this is a migratory stop for many species of birds, we plan on returning in the fall to see if we can catch some of the action.

River spots are on concrete pads with some random ones in the main loops. There are trees on each lot, some of them need a good trim as we hit some smaller branches backing in and we were only 11’3”. We had dead minnows, presumable used for bait, left in our lot, and had to clean up from the previous person. Water hookup is standard but we did have an issue with the power.
We hooked our surgeguard up to 50A and read green across the board. A few hours in it lost power on one pole and tripped off numerous breakers in the RV and GFCIs. I tested the hookup and found a bad lead in the pigtail of the pedestal. Swapped over to the 30A and no issues.
The dump station is narrow and is literally a dump station with only one water hookup to rinse.
The area is very quiet at night and the stars put in a nice show.

We had a site right on the river. Site was concrete and level. Included a fire pit, grill and picknick table with trash hook. The park does have a swim beach and play ground. The down side was that our firepit and site had trash in it and around the site. Also the park has alot of sand burrs everywhere. I would recommend going in the early spring or fall when the birds are migrating as the salt flats are one of the main layover spots on their trip north and south.

We were fortunate to stay here during a very warm day at the end of winter. The river road campground was very nice with level concrete pads and excellent rest room facilities. The location along the river was pretty and there were quite a number of birds including white pelicans. There was only one other camper in the entire park. Obviously, if it was full it would be a different experience. There is room for bike riding as well as hiking. We enjoyed a gorgeous sunset over the salt lake.

Sites are right on the Salt Fork Arkansas River bank. Concrete pads for parking on, Electric and water. Plus a dump station to use Google maps had me go down a sketchy gravel road for 4 miles to get here but other than that beautiful ride into the park. Park is well maintained

Stayed May 14-16th to try out our new RV. It's only 1 hour and 20 minutes from our West Oklahoma farm. Our neighbors had loud music but overall nice and quiet setting. We were going to hike at Wichita Recreation Area but the trail head parking lots were full. So we hiked the trails at the State Park. Easy & Beautiful in May.

This got a "we can come back here" from my husband. That doesn't happen often, so there you go. It has a new toilet/shower house. We had a sight with water and electric, and used their dump on our way out the morning we left. It had nice areas to walk and stretch after our travels through KS in OK. There were red ants, but luckily we didn't bring any with us! Nice stay.
