“a unique geologic wonder”

Devils Postpile National Monument is a unique geologic feature, formed by an eruption of basalt lava over 100,000 years ago. The lava cooled uniformly, leaving surface cracks and resulting in thousands of vertical basalt columns. Downstream from Devils Postpile National Monument are the amazing Rainbow Falls. Falling over a sharp 101-foot drop, Rainbow Falls sends colorful rainbows in the mist. The best time to experience the rainbows in midday, when the sun is highest. Scenic shuttle bus is mandatory and is fee based.  And if you're not into badass geology, there's more to do in the area than just ponder the odd formations: the massive, 101-foot-tall Rainbow Falls is also protected by the National Monument designation-- it got its enchanting name from the fact that rainbows constantly form in the mist off the churning water. Devils Postpile is also located with the Ansel Adams Wilderness, near the Inyo National Forest, and is along both the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail. So, if you're really into hiking some of America's most amazing landscapes, then adding Devils Postpile to your trip should be pretty easy!

There is a shuttle you have to take in and it costs 7 bucks pp so be prepared to spend a few hours here. There are a lot of things to see and do here and numerous hiking trails. The bus leaves every 20 minutes and it's a bit of a ride in so it takes extra time to see even if you are just going to the post pile which is a short hike.

There are multiple trails you can take along the path to the monument itself. It has information as you go about the place and it's inhabitants. Make sure you bring some water and don't forget to visit Rainbow Falls while you're here! Such a beautiful place.
