A country doctor campaigned in favor of making this a national park in the '20's, but Steve Mather, then the first head of the NPS, said it was too small and urged it become a state park. It became Arkansas's first state park, with a nice nod to Mather by naming the main lodge after him. I'm a huge fan of the CCC, and you see their phenomenal work everywhere here, and properly credited. It's as timeless and beautiful as when they made it. A loop is definitely a cut above, with more generously spaced sites. A new loop is being built on the other side of the road. Not sure when it will be ready, but with new RV sales up 33% YOY, it's a pleasure to see some new campsites being built, especially at a park this beautiful. There is a restaurant on site, with limited options and times due to manpower problems. The lodge is NPS quality. The park is beautiful!
