The sites are heavily wooded and spaced far enough apart for a lot of privacy. Try to stay as close to the river as possible to drown out the highway noise. About half of the campsites are reservable and the other half are walkup. Read the dates carefully on the reserved sites as you may be able to squeeze in 1-2 nights on a normally reservable site. I stayed on a Wed-Fri in July. Campground was full by 5 pm on Thur night so arrive early. Did not fill up Wed night. Camp host was very accommodating. Firewood for sale on site. If into mountain biking try taking The Dalles River Trail to connect to the forest road to the Skookum River Trail. It will keep you off the highway.

I came in to stay mid week during August and there were numerous sites to choose from. I was impressed by the amount of privacy and shade trees between the sites. Two of the loops have easy access to the beach trail and it is about a 1/4 mile walk to the dunes. Be choosy in picking your site if you require a short walk to the restroom. It can be a long walk depending on where you set up! I enjoyed the quietness of the campground and the ability to hear the ocean waves.

This is a busy campground full of families and many children on bikes but there are lots of trees to give more privacy between sites. The outside loop sites have larger parking pads than the inside ones so keep this in mind if towing a trailer. I loved the miles of hiking trails and my only regret were trails were hiking or horse riding but no mountain biking. I understand the reasoning but wish a few could be designated for bikes. The lake has kayak rentals but I did not check out the prices.
