I camped one weeknight on a non-electric site in late April. This is an older campground built for folks to take advantage of fishing and boating on Rocky Fork Lake. The layout is haphazard and directional signs guiding you to your campsite are almost non-existent. Ohio charges a $6.50 reservation fee, so my total bill was $29.50. If you have a bigger rig, be sure to check with the office to confirm site pad lengths and access. Lengths vary wildly and some pads are far from level. Positives include clean (but old) restrooms, a nice camp store, convenient dump stations and lots of great hiking nearby (Arc of Appalachia Preserves). The campground felt safe and drive-through traffic was minimal. The biggest negative for the site I chose (39) was road noise - it was bad. Also, there's not a whole lot of tree cover on most sites. Overall, it's not a camping experience that stands out to me. Paint Creek State Park nearby offers a more interesting and scenic camping experience, especially for smaller rigs, pop-ups and camper vans.

Living in Ohio and visiting many state parks, this is one of my favorite public campgrounds in the state. It's mostly because the staff here truly care about their park and it shows. Everything is mowed, cleaned and cared for as best as they are able. As a life-long, (now retired) park employee I can see it right away. I feel appreciated when I'm here. First the positives. Shawnee State Park and Shawnee State Forest are as remote as you can get in Ohio. No Verizon service and I suspect no service for the other carriers either. This is hilly, unglaciated deciduous forest with excellent hiking, fishing and isolation. Don't underestimate the hikes in this park and be prepared. The restrooms/showers are clean and stocked. The campground is quiet and virtually devoid of drive-through traffic. Site pads are paved. There's a small amphitheater, playground, boat rental and mini-golf course in the campground in the busy season. Now the negatives. Most site pads are fairly short and the sites themselves are often hilly. The campground is best suited for class B's, pop-ups and smaller campers. There are sites for 5th wheels and RV's but your options are limited. Some of the electric hookups look older. Call the camp office and they'll likely provide you with guidance for your rig. Hope this helps!

This small campground has so many problems I don't know where to start. I camped on several nice weekdays in March. First, the good aspects... It's convenient to Chillicothe and things I wanted to see and do. The sites themselves are fine for cooler season camping. With minimal shade or electric, I would personally avoid the heat of summer. Gravel site pads are reasonably level and sufficiently spacious. The outer sites have a place to tie horses, but are otherwise usable for non-equestrian campers. There was one potable water source that was functional. The park itself has a lot of nice hiking and feels safe. Now the negatives... One of the park's best overlooks (dedicated as a Covid-19 memorial) is actually located in the campground. So is a popular trail. Couple that with it's proximity to Chillicothe and there's absolutely no privacy. It's a parade of locals either using the park amenities (fine not their fault), cruising the campground or dumping their trash in the overflowing dumpsters (seems to be a popular pastime). Traffic continues well after dark and resumes before sunrise in the morning. It's unexplainable why park officials designed a campground in this way. It felt unsafe to me after dark. The lone pit toilet with just one commode each doesn't have a privacy door and isn't lighted at night. In fact there's no security lighting in the entire campground. After a two night stay I never saw a marked park vehicle, staff or security. Avoid this one if you can.
