After battling rush hour traffic in Atlanta and finding no vacancies near the city, we were finally able to find a spot here - although it filled up soon after our 7:30 arrival. When we turned into the park past the purple VW microbus painted with peace symbols and slowed down for the resident peacock, we knew we had found a unique campground.

The setting is beautiful, with an abundance of wildlife, mature hardwoods and rolling hills. Although the campground was virtually full, it was very quiet except for the sounds of nature. You are really in the middle of the forest, but less than two miles from the Interstate. No road noise here, though.

The owners met us at check-in and showed us to our site. Very nice and accommodating people! The campground office has a well-stocked general store. They even deliver pizza to your site!

The place was a former KOA (backwards is A-OK) so there are quite a few amenities: miniature golf, pool, large playground, Kamping Kabins, community fire pit, etc. All are kept in great condition. If it had been 20 years ago and our kids were with us, they would have made us stay more than one night. Everything is there for a fun family vacation - even goats and ducks to feed!

I did not give it 5 stars because of two reasons: the sites were not level (be sure you have your leveling blocks) and the bathhouse, while clean, is in need of an update.

We had a 30 amp site with water and no sewer, with a Good Sam discount.

We unfortunately had to leave after two nights in early April because of work, but got lucky again this week and secured a site for next year.

Site 9 is gorgeous, large and has a view of the ocean. You still have to walk to the beach entrance to go to the beach in order not to disturb flora, it it was a short walk.

I loved the beach. I had it pretty much to myself. While low tide wasn’t great for swimming because of sea grass, high tide was fine. I enjoyed snorkeling because of the abundance of sea life. We took our kayak out to one of the sand bars (near the channel markers) and those are great to swim from at low tide.

The bathhouse was modern and nicely kept. They also had a book exchange there. No laundry facilities.

The sites that are on the ocean side Face the sun for most of the day, so bring a sun shelter. Our awning did not provide a lot of protection. Next year we will be on the other side, so our trailer will block most of the sun. At the beginning of April the sun is still at quite an angle.

We stayed here for a week in January 2021. Our reservation was taken over the phone the previous July with nothing but verbal confirmation, making us a little uneasy. But we had a site when we arrived.

A big plus to this park is the price. $29 for full hook ups, less if you reserve long-term. Another plus is the location. The park is in the middle of a marsh. There is a 3 mile bike trail, hiking trails, kayak and canoe rentals (inexpensive) and close proximity to Savannas Preserve State Park. If you are a nature-lover, this place is for you.

My main complaint about this park is that you can't reserve a particular site. There are some gorgeous sites that back up to the water, but we weren't able to get one - even though they remained empty for most of our visit. The site you get is up to the discretion of the scheduler. You can request a site backing up to the preserve, but nothing is guaranteed. The smaller your unit, the less likely you will get one of those sites.

Sites V1 - V9 are quite small. V10-17 are a little larger. G section is somewhat secluded, off on its own. Sites with just numbers are the largest. If you plan to use a tent, the tent area is on a little isthmus away from the other sites.

Reviews have mentioned the train traffic. This SE Florida and if you are near Route 1, you are near the tracks. Personally, I like the sound of trains - but I also bring ear plugs. More noisy than the trains are the birds. If you love birds as I do, you'll be happy when they squak at 5AM. I felt like I was in a Tarzan movie and loved it.

The park was about 60% Floridians and 40% snow birds when I was there. After 9PM it was extremely quiet (except for trains and birds!).

Sites are mostly very private, some wooded and some open. A very quiet park with only about 25% occupancy midweek. If you do not reserve in advance, you need to drive to the office and call (using their “yellow phone”) after you have selected a site.

Could not give 5 stars because:
1. Electric boxes are ridiculously far away from the campsites. With 50’ of cord we were not able to reach, so we had to back the camper into the path intended for us to walk to the box. Some sites are worse - up to 100 feet. Some sites have the boxes quite close, but these are generally the less desirable ones. 2, 4, 24, 25 are among those that have easily accessible boxes.
2. The only access to water is a very hard to operate hand pump. I had to hang onto it like the Hunchback of Notre Dame and pull down with all my body weight. After getting most of our water, an employee offered to let us fill up with a hose at the office.
3. Sites are not level. Plan on having a good leveling system if you have a trailer.
4. Poison ivy is EVERYWHERE. Use extreme caution!

The pit toilets were relatively clean. There was only one per loop.

The lake water was warm, and there is a small shallow swimming beach which kids would enjoy. No lifeguard.

Our site (23) had a long path to the lake with a ladder going down the small cliff to make it possible to set in a kayak. There is also a boat launch with a couple of places to set in.

We visited this park to see the night sky, but it was cloudy both nights. If we return, it will probably be during a less humid time of the year. We really wanted to see comet Neowise, but it wasn’t meant to be.
