We stayed at the 4x4 Campground on Gold Lake and it was beautiful! The 4x4 trail is apparently very rough, but we actually boated to the campsite because the road was closed at the time of our camping. The park is redoing the bathrooms at the 4x4 campground. The Gold Lake campground was packed when we arrived on Thursday morning, so be aware, it's a busy one during the summer! But what a gorgeous view on the lake, and I must say, the 4x4 campground was completely empty and that was the best part about my camping trip! No other people around, just nature! The water wasn't cold either, it was perfect for the warm weather. No cell service. If you want cell service while you're camping then you don't really want to go camping apparently. Cell service was attainable just a few miles up the road in Graeagle.

We had a really rough time with the camp host. They definitely were playing up their role to be the campground police. Be aware that dogs are no longer allowed on trails or the beach or allowed to swim in the lake here. The camp host had no problem walking the beach telling people to get their dogs off the beach and water. Cinder cone is a hard but awesome hike, with a great view at the end.
We won't be back due to the National park rules regarding pets. I prefer to let me dogs swim and have fun!
