Sorry, I guess I should identify who I am. I'm Earl Root and can be reached at beastworks@mac.com. after I left Lowery I got married and settled in south central Nebraska. If anyone has questions about where things were or what's what I'd be happy to help.

My last birthday in October 2022 I turned eighty years old. In June 1961 fresh out of high school I enlisted in the us Air Force. After basic training at Lackland air base I started school at Shepard air base on the workings of the Atlas ICBM, I had completed my training and was assigned to a site at Plattsburgh, NY when when I was "asked" to continue training on the Titan 1. I was told this is brand new, the sites were still under construction. As soon my training was complete I was assigned to the 849th strategic missile squadron at Lowrey air base in Denver, Co. When I got there I joined the acceptance team with eight other airmen and officers. We were right on time and gained a lot of hands on with the Martin-marietta contractors. Things took a turn when a worker was crushed when one of the silo doors fell on him. after review work resumed. Soon the sites were loaded and accepted by the Air Force and all 18 missiles were on line. More Missile Maintenance Techs (MMT) were coming in and assigned sites. By this time we became the 451st Strategic Missile Wing (SMW) with two squadrons, the 724th and the 725th Missile Maintenance Squadrons (.MMS) with each having 3 missal sites with 3 missiles each. 4A, 4B, 4C in the 724th MMS and 5A, 5B, 5C in the 725th MMS. I was assigned to the missile site you guys are talking about which was 5B north of Deer Trail, CO in 1962. Fast forward to may of 1965, 5B was the last to deactivate. When that was done I still had a month to go. Col. Jake Thurman was site commander and he said to me" looks like we're both out of a job. you may as well muster out" so I did. Sometimes it all seems like a dream. People sneak into the place I spent 3 years of my life working at. If you go down the elevator shaft to the bottom the main room is to your left, the power production is to your right. there were 4 huge diesel electric generators. Straight ahead is to the three launchers. Under the floor of the main room is where all the sewage went before being pumped up to the lagoon.
