The walkway is a great way to spend a few hours getting some exercise and seeing a great view. If you are in a hurry to see the view, park on the Highland side. It is a much shorter walk to get to the river. But, the objective should be to walk the entire span..... The big complaints are the bikers, who may not heed the walkers, and the dog walkers who may not clean up after their pets. Yes, they can be a pain, but the benefits far outweigh any inconvenience. At either end of the walkway, there are bathrooms (enclosed Port-a-Potties), which are kept very clean. There are also food carts on either side, and good restaurants (Lola's) located on the Poughkeepsie side. There are very friendly volunteers, headquartered at the Highland, who usually can be found walking/riding the bridge. The walkway is approx. 1.3 miles across, but it connects to a rail trail, which extends 10+ miles to the east and 3+ miles to the west, so if you bring a bike, you can take a good ride. Having seen the dilapidated bridge wasting away for many years, and having it repaired and available as a great recreational option makes living in the Hudson Valley even better.
