DINNER The banquette at La Quercia, an intimate neighborhood restaurant in the beachy western neighborhood of Kitsilano (a 15-minute cab ride from Gastown), is a tight fit, and might feel even tighter after you work your way through the seven-course tasting
menu (a screaming deal at $45). The stripped-down Northern Italian cooking is gorgeously crafted: lightly cured ruby trout, or thin agnolotti plumped with nettles and ricotta. The chefs know when to deploy big flavors, too, like an outrageously beefy tagliata course (and the Morellino di Scansano wine that accompanies it).

Farther north, the tiny towns of Bow and Edison, about 75 miles from Seattle, are where all the cool kids in the valley have set up shop. Amid the galleries in Edison is Breadfarm bakery, with handcrafted rustic breads and unforgettable cookies. Next door, Slough Food sells everything you might want to slap on their neighbor’s bread: delicious oils, salamis, and cheeses imported and local (try the fresh chèvre from nearby Gothberg Farms).
