This is my second time staying here. High desert environment along Birch Creek. Quiet and sites are well off the highway on BLM land. This is boondock territory although there are some pitt toilets near the northern sections. This is a large area and used by OHVs, hunters, and fishermen. We back our travel trailers right up to the creek and enjoy the view. Lots of beautiful birds and scenery. The location is great if you’re looking to get away from everything. Not so good if you want anything besides solitude.

Stayed here several nights while supporting a Ike on the PCT. Not far from Sonora Pass and on Hwy 108 off of Hwy 395 between Bridgeport and Walker. There are 17 campsites here and limited to smaller trailers and tent camping. My trailer was 24’ and just fit. Had a nice site with the river going just behind me. There is a Marine Mountain Warfare Training Center not far away and I had occasional platoons quietly running through the campground with full packs. There is good fishing here and PCT access at Sonora Pass about 6 miles away and several other hiking trails near by. There are no hookups here but fresh water available in a few spots. Pit toilets were always clean. Signs warn no semis with trailers over 35’ from kingpin.

We stayed here but only as it was along our route to destination. Would only stay here if I were this way again. Susanville is not what I would call a destination spot. Full utilities here. Bathroom and shower were clean. Grass and plenty of poop stations for the pup and three kennels for dogs off-leash. The RV park itself was quiet but there was some road noise from the road a couple blocks away as Susanville isn’t really a quiet town. We were assigned site#13 which was right in front of the entrance which concerned me but turned out not to be an issue.

Early June 2022 - Did a drive through as last information from NFS was in 2021 stating it was closed. A few years ago fire and high winds devastated this campground. I had considered it as a support spot for a hiker doing the PCT. The trail drops out of the hills into this campground and onto a dirt road to proceed to Seiad Valley. No work has been done to this campground and an extensive Google search found the government accepting bids in June 2022 for major reconstruction of the area. My visit found the dirt road passable but I would be tentative about towing my rig on that narrow road despite it being off-road equipped - no where to pull over for oncoming traffic. There doesn’t appear to be cell coverage, at least for ATT, anywhere in this valley. The campground itself was overgrown, downed trees, sites were indistinguishable, obvious vandalism and broken glass. Looked like some logging or firewood harvesting going on. The gate was unlocked when I went through but probably for contractors to have a look for bidding. Hope this was helpful.

Sign at park entrance said “Campground Full” but it was still morning on a Thursday. Drove in and grabbed the first empty site I found that would accommodate my 20’ travel trailer. No hookups but I was okay with that. Sites with hookups are an additional $10 over the regular park entry fee and campsite fee. There are actually only about a third of the sites with hookups but solar was good. Restrooms were clean and the showers were free. The key here is to come early and keep moving around until something opens up. If you do get a spot and go out for the day, make it very obvious that you are in the spot, lots of poachers. Get a map at the visitors center and enjoy the many hiking trails available. Best photo opportunities are before and during sunrise and just before sunset. There is a double dump station just outside the campground. Park Rangers patrol the area regularly.

Located at mile 26.2 of the Pacific Crest Trail. Small (14 sites) NFS campground adjacent to an equestrian campground. Reservations not available. We arrived on a Thursday and no one here but by Saturday morning they were nearly full. Highway is very close. Sites are appropriately spaced. Pit toilet, water available in the campground, no site-specific services. Probably not great for larger rigs. No problem for 23’ TT. Back-in only. Bumpy dirt road, most sites require leveling.
