What a hidden gem! We stopped at Bay View Campground after a Canadian trip crossing back into the States at Sault St. Marie. Our site was on the water side, with a set of steps down to the long expanse of gorgeous sandy beach on a calm and warm (?!?!) section of Lake Superior. The site was ridiculously HUGE. Unfortunately, we could not move our travel trailer past the big rock blocking entrance to the actual campsite so we left it where cars probably park on the site driveway, (and didn't want to challenge what appeared to be a campground rule) but the next morning the campground host said the rock was just to prevent massive big rigs from going in there and snapping tree branches, and we would have been fine had we chosen to go around it with our little trailer. Facilities all appeared clean (we didn't use them) and the campground host was super friendly and helpful, eager to share "Must See" Michigan gems with us, even pulling out a handy map to give us as he circled waterfalls we had to visit. Great coffee shop about 10 miles east (Dancing Crane) with a really interesting story about how it came to be. This is a 5 star location we definitely plan to return to, unless the secret is out and it is too tough to get a campsite!
A few things to note: the campground is on a stretch of road with not much else. Gas up in Brimley or Sault St. Marie before heading out, especially if you're running low. Also, make sure you have your info ready before you reach the campground, as there is really spotty cell service. We arrived and then had to call Reservations.gov, because I'd forgotten what campsite we'd reserved and we couldn't get data service, and had just 1 bar on the phone to make the call. These are just tips from me and not a critique whatsoever on this beautiful little campground. I still can't believe we found it. It was supposed to just be a convenient overnight stop, and we ended up spending a whole morning strolling the beach, sitting in the sun reading, with our feet in the water, and backtracking for coffee at Dancing Crane.
