Stopover on way to Glacier. As per previous reviewers this is fantastic if you love Boondocking. Cell coverage is decent. Gravel trails are ok but for safety I’d say 4wd if any rain on forecast or already wet. Big rigs would be fine if you take it slow. I saw 1 other camper on a different fork. Almost no bugs mid July.

If you read through the reviews from 2018 till now, you’ll notice a marked change in tone. The reason? Helicopters. There’s a tour operator across the street who’s flight path is across the campground every 15 minutes. I’ve stayed at this campground maybe a dozen times in the last couple. The helicopter action has just gotten ridiculous. There’s always been traffic noise from Highway 98 and the sites closest to the highway suffer the most, but it was tolerable if you just turned on a fan or a noisemaker. Still a great place to stay at night and a great beach. The bath house is pretty good. The sites has mentioned by everyone a stunning and private.

Arrived 7pm after hiking in park. Registration booth closes at 4. Self checkin is allowable. State website said none available, but there were plenty of open sites (must not allow same day booking?) - registration booth shows which sites are open and for how many nights.we like to back into a site with tree canopy - there’s plenty of those to be had. Basically canopy on edge sites, open grassy field for inner sites. There is a canyon like drop off behind our site and several others. maybe a something to watch for if you have little ones. Campground is a mile out side the actual starved rock SP so great for access to it. Sites have partial hookups which we needed as the day was 97F so air conditioning required!
