Really nice sites to be found here. It was raining when we got there, so we stopped right past the cattle guard. There are a few sites there, but way more around the fire tower. Go there. A few cars passed occasionally, but not a bother. It was very quiet. There is a pit toilet by the fire tower and a one hole out house by the cattle guard. The road was easy. We had no issues even when wet. It dried out quickly.
It’s about 10 miles to Canyon Village where all the tourists are. 😒

We read the reviews and went north on FS257
Maybe a mile. The road was dry and pretty good. (Beware if it is wet though. I can imagine it would be sloppy in spots). I crawl anyway, but it maybe took 10 minutes to find a good spot. There were a few along the way, but we wanted farther from the highway. Nice and level an so quiet! We heard a few coyote howls way off in the distance at night. Nothing to explore here but desert though. We rode the dirt bike 60 miles and found a lot of nothing. We tried to get to White Pocket, but the sand was so deep we had to turn around. It would take a serious 4wd to get up that road! It is very dry here. No streams anywhere.
The N Rim of the canyon is way less crowded than the S Rim and this is a good place to stay for that. It is a long road in though. Jacob Lake Inn is a must visit. Great food, really great bakery goods, and a staff of friendly, energetic young people that will impress.

Ditto to others. It’s a gravel lot. Piles of horse poop around since they rodeo here. Workers are noisy but we slept fine. Elect and water. Real good part is the bike trail is right behind us. We rode bikes all over town. Durango is very bike friendly. Animas Trail is about 7 miles long along the river with several really nice parks.

This is right in town and convenient. Shuttle buses stop right out front, so you can skip the huge parking issue in the park. Walk to restaurants. Really hot and dusty while we were here, but not unbearable. Lots of nice shade trees by the sites. Most are pull thru and pretty level. We had full hookups and our AC ran continuous in the heat. Plenty of power. The showers are awesome! Clean, nice tile, benches, hot water and AIR CONDITIONED! WiFi works pretty good too.
Reserve way in advance. We stayed in June 2018.

We left a CG farther north a day early to head home due to weather. We stopped here to check it out for future visiting and found MANY empty sites. I guess others thought the same about the weather, but it had cleared up. We got lucky.
There are 3 loops. A, B & C. B & C were pretty crowded still and the sites are tight. We found a great open site on the water in A loop. There were several sites in A loop that we would be happy with. We are in a 20' trailer.
The restrooms were good and the showers hot. There are GREAT mountain bike trails here! There is a separate swimming area and a boat ramp about 1/2 mile away. We will definitely visit here again.
Fresh water and a dump station are on premises, but I don't think any sites had hookups.
They do accept reservations. I think we were the Murphys for a night... ;-)

This is a remote CG on a pretty stream. We camped there in January and the weather turned south on us, so we did not get out and explore. There are a couple of trails nearby and trout fishing is supposed to be good. We have a 20' trailer and there are maybe 3 sites that I would consider suitable (size and level). The roads are a bit skinny going in. I you meet someone, somebody will need to back up. Mulky CG is on the way in and has a few good sites, but they are right on the gravel road.

We expected this "in the middle of nowhere" area to be empty. WRONG!!! (mid July 2017)
We passed several full CGs and got this site, because someone cancelled. Got lucky.
The CG was just a place to park for us. We explore.
Advice for the drive in... The Hwy 14 crosses the Bighorn Mountains. It is VERY Long and STEEP on both sides. If your rig does not have LOTS of ponies for this climb, DO NOT attempt when the temps are high. We passed a few sidelined rigs and one had smoke. Not Good!
The Black Mountain lookout is a nearby hike and the view is magnificent. A must do!
Lots of off road opportunities here too. :-)

Cg is grown up, dusty, windy. Very few campers here, so we did not have trouble finding a decent site for our 20' trailer. CG host was very good. He actually starting cutting grass when we were leaving. Planted flowers at the toilets!
The best part here is the forest service roads all around. There are awesome sights to be seen, especially if you have an ORV. Beautiful backcountry lakes, wildlife, etc.
Kennedy Peak is an 11,000 foot bald with unbelievable views. The 10+ mile road up is rough though. We were on a motorcycle, so no big deal, but the trees down would be an issue for larger vehicles. No ATT service. Water does not have threaded connector.

Other areas in the parks are crammed with people. This place is not. It is nothing but a handful of sites in a field. No services. Pit toilets that we did not visit. This is just a good base camp between Teton and Yellowstone away from crowds. No sound. No ATT.

Honestly, you can keep Florida. The sand, salt, bugs, heat, etc. are just not fun to us. But the dreary winter in Atlanta promoted us to head south for some sunshine. We found it! This park is very nice. We boondock mostly, so usually detest being too close to others in CGs. This one has enough space and vegetation to give you some privacy. Paved pads are all very level. The shower was big and clean, but the water was kinda cool. We were in the loop closer to the highway and the noise was pretty noticable. The other loops appear much quieter as we were exploring on bikes. The spring is beautiful and the paddle trip down the creek is a must do. Take that trip as early as possible to avoid the crowds. We tried hard to be stealthy so we could sneak up on critters. We saw a turkey, a gator, a bunch of turtles and lots of fish in the clear water. Then the crowd caught up with us. :(
We did not get to hike any. Somebody saw a bear two weeks back, so everything is roped off and closed to hiking. Those FL folks must be a bunch of fraidy cats. They have never been to WY I guess. ;)
