Generally this is a place where you can actually combine loads of outdoor related activities, such as horse riding, camping and a great place to bring your kids to make them get familiar with nature. A great place for meeting new friends and a great place to feel for a couple of days like a real cowboy !!!!

Are you the kind of a traveler who is experienced in harsh situations and looks for wild isolated natural places ? Yes, there are still such places where the nature is pure and the presence of humans is just minimal.

If you are looking for the experience of staring at dark as coal skies, enjoying the singing of various bird singing and generally come closer to 'mother' nature, then if you are in West Texas you should definitely visit the Big Bend Natural Park. There you will have the privilege for being one of the very few people to see from close spectacular landscapes, such as limestone temple-like canyons curved for thousands of years by rivers which in many places form magical spots. One of these spots are the Cattail Falls. Be aware that you will need to be experienced hiker to get there and since the Cattail Falls are located in a desert environment you must be very careful of wild animals, such as bears and snakes that may be found there. But above that, it is a place that you will feel amazing for visiting it!

If you are a fan of wild wild west, then one of the best places to visit in order to feel that special excitement is definitely Fort McKavett Historical Park.

It was built to protect Texas from wild tribes of Indians, mostly Apache and Comanche and it proved to be a symbol of stability and peace in the region.

Nowadays it is a great place to visit, especially if you have kids. There is no better way to teach your youngsters American history than actually visiting places such as the Fort McKavett. It is quite amazing that many buildings are in kinda good condition, if you consider they were built in the mid 1800s, and some of them are even furnished. The old base hospital is being used as a visitors center where you can learn interesting things about the Fort's history in the small museum that is based there. The staff are friendly and the place is easy accessible by handicap people!

Even though in general terms i am against the zoo, since i prefer to see the animals free in nature, nevertheless the Abilene Zoo is one of the best zoos i have seen in small towns.

Certainly it is an ideal place for families to visit it during the afternoon hours and for kids to see from close how wild animals look like. There is a great range of animals, reptiles and birds, including some scary ones such as lions, tigers, and bears. But i have to admit that giraffes are the main attraction of this place. Really awesome and beautiful animals and it is a real pleasure to feed them with crackers! The main advantage of this zoo is that it is clean and animals are kept in relatively big spaces.
