When parking became a problem in the business district of Winters, California, a local citizen decided to pull an April Fool's prank. He installed an old--yet still functioning--parking meter in the downtown area. It is surrounded by 100 free spaces.
Out-of-towners are occasionally seen dropping in a quarter and then walking away grumbling.
The meter collects about $100 a year and it all goes to the fireworks fund for the 4th of July celebration.
If you're passing through Winters, drop in a few coins and then come back on the 4th.
After all, you paid for it.
