A nice short detour off the expressway. It was the first train robbery. The monument is simple with explanations. Not a bad location to have a roadside picnic.
Hearst visited Europe with his mother when he was a 10 year-old and was enamored with the castles and palaces. Specifically with Italian and Spanish buildings. He was a collector and amassed many items which 50 years later he decided to incorporate into the Hearst Castle. The observation is that he replicated in amalgam of Italian and Spanish and possibly French architecture into his castle.
Well worth the visit. Cheaper than a trip to Europe. A one-of-a kind collection and building in the United States. Talk with the tour guides who are extremely knowledgeable of the history and the Hearst family.
It the end of Route 66. Fun to get a picture showing the iconic sign stating it is the end of the Route. Nice stroll, great to people watch, the beach is fun when the weather is warm. There is a restaurant at the end of the pier which is very enjoyable to have a meal.
Typical of many piers there are many vendors.
Wonderful drive. The redwood section is quite magical and well worth the visit. There is a giant redwood on the south side that has fallen. So huge. Stop and stand next to the fallen redwood. It is impressive and drive is wonderful.
Large redwood that a car can squeeze through. Family owned for generations. There is a gift shop. It was an interesting stop. Entry fee - not much. Look up to see the towering redwood.
