“Formed over 20 years ago the Mokau Museum and Gallery records and preserves the rich history of northern Taranaki, from the Mount Messenger tunnel in the south to the Okau tunnel in the west and the Awakino tunnel in the north.”
The region has a rich and colourful history reflecting both Māori and Pakeha settlement. Coal features predominantly in the region’s history and large rivers pass through the district, providing access to the region’s interior.
These fascinating stories and many other aspects of the region's history are featured in the purpose built Mokau Museum and gallery
The museum is the ideal starting point for those interested in the history of the region and it houses important archival records, photographs and family histories. The museum has public internet facilities.
Open: 10am – 4pm summer, 10am – 3pm winter.
Closed Christmas Day and Good Friday.
Note: as the museum is run by volunteers, opening hours may vary. Please call first.
