“One of the most valuable wetland habitat areas in the ACT, and of national and international importance.”
Jerrabomberra Wetlands (JW) is closer than you think! Located in the heart of Canberra in between Kingston Foreshore and Fyshwick, this 'novel ecosystem' formed when Lake Burley Griffen was created in the 60s. The damming of the Molongolo river created a floodplain of water and eventually led to a wetland environment.
Now birds travel from all around to take refuge here. One example is the Latham's Snipe that flies directly from Japan to arrive at JW. Other wildlife that call this environment home are water rats, turtles, water dragons and platypus.
Make sure you take your binoculars when you go walking at Jerrabomberra Wetlands. There are strategically located paths and bird hides that will help you discover the delights of bird and wildlife watching.
Events are happening all the time at Jerrabomberra Wetlands to give visitors the opportunity to learn, explore and be inspired. For more details of happenings and school programs visit the website.
