“urban oasis & wildlife refuge”
An urban oasis, a refuge for wildlife, a botanical garden emphasizing nature, sustainability and environmental learning, and a place for contemplation, celebration, and recreation. You may have passed the sign for Mead Garden countless times and never thought to give it a try. Once there you'll find a great place to enjoy a lazy afternoon traversing the nature trails, wandering through the Legacy Garden or dipping your feet in the freshwater ponds. It's located north of Orlando just off 17-92. Coming from Orlando, just after you enter Winter Park city limits, turn right (east) onto Garden Dr. This will lead you directly to Mead Botanical Garden. There are also signs to guide you along the way, but easy to miss if you're not on the lookout.
My husband and I were looking for a quiet and interesting place to spend an afternoon at. Since it rained heavily for the past couple of days, regular trails such as at Lake Jesup Wilderness Area or Rock Springs Run were out of the question as most of these tend to be flooded after heavy rain.
Mead Garden, however, offers a plethora of areas, paths and a boardwalk that are even accessible if slightly wet or muddy.
It has a very quiet and serene atmosphere and offered a beautiful selection of plants and blooming flowers (despite us being here in Feb/Mar).
Aside from several cute squirrels that seem to feel quite at home at Mead Garden (we saw more than twenty in one area at once) we saw many turtles, birds of all kinds, little frogs, lizzards and beautiful butterflies.
Walking past the pavillions and picnic area we were even able to spot a hawk sitting up in a tree and watching over the park.
For flower lovers there are also several different areas with butterfly attracting plants, wild flowers and a beautiful rose garden.
We spent about two to three hours there, just walking through this oasis of peacefulness and there were still more areas to discover if only it would not have started to get darker already.
We can definately recommend it - even if its just for a short walk or a brief rest at one of the ponds in order to relax and unwind.
Spent an afternoon here with my boyfriend and our pet dog. It's a very quiet place with a serene and peaceful feel to it. Though the park is quite old, it still has the beauty of nature. We walked around and just wandered through this lovely place for maybe an hour. The tall trees provided us good shade. The flowers were in full bloom, too! They were bright and colorful; a definite feast for the eyes. It's really nice that there's a spot like this in the the middle of the city. Definitely a lovely escape from all the hustle and bustle of daily life.
A nice way to spend an afternoon. Has a cool Geocache too!
