“site of Washington's regimental headquarters”
Fort Loudoun was the site of Washington’s regimental headquarters during the French & Indian War. On-going archaeological investigations have uncovered intact period deposits including part of the barrack’s foundation, as well as numerous artifacts. Washington oversaw the digging of a 103 foot deep well, in 1757, that still exists at the site.
