“a prime example of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian architecture”
The John E. Christian House (1954), located in West Lafayette, Indiana, represents a pristine example of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian architecture. Still occupied by the original client and owner, Dr. John Christian, SAMARA is strictly maintained to the exacting standards set by Mr. Wright. SAMARA contains refinements of over forty innovations by this world famous architect, yet is unique in that it was specifically designed for Dr. Christian and his wife, Catherine, and their daughter, Linda.
This is privately owned, but there are tours on occasion and the owner Dr Christian is very accommodating. The house is immaculately preserved in the original delivery from Frank Lloyd Wright, everything including the furniture was designed by Wright and kept that way. inside looks like a time capsule from the 60's. the story is an interesting one too. the Dr and his wife did not have a lot of money and owned this 1 acre parcel of land (the min Wright would design for) and hounded Wright with letters asking if Wright would design their house. After years of pursuit, Wright agreed and delivered the plans for Samara which is the name for the helicopter-like seeds that are common in the area. If you get a chance to tour the house, it is worth it if you are an architecture buff. it is very difficult to see from any street as it is completely secluded with landscaping.
You can't see the house. I went in winter with no leaves. Drove past 3 times and still didn't see anything but the roof.
