“Located only minutes southwest of Des Moines”
Bird viewing station. Eight full hookups. Walnut Woods encompasses 260 acres of wooded bottomland along the Raccoon River. Within the park lies a large surviving natural stand of black walnut trees. More than 90 species of birds have been identified along the numerous foot and bridle trails throughout the park and along the river. The valley in which Walnut Woods is located was created by the meandering of the Raccoon River. Since the park elevation is not much higher than the normal river level, constant changes can be seen in its banks. The most dramatic is where the river channel runs against the western edge of the park. Constant churning and washing in the past removed tons of soil, sand and gravel. In the mid-1980s, the most vulnerable areas of the riverbank were protected by rock "riprap" and special jetties designed to minimize erosion.Located only minutes southwest of Des Moines, the park provides shaded picnic areas with fireplaces and tables and peaceful spots for river fishing. The park is open year-round and is perfect for cross-county skiing with 2 1/2 miles of ski trails. A pleasant equestrian trail is also located in the park.

Confirmed by 4 users | Last reported on May 13, 2021We always have a good time when we camp here, the only thing missing is showers. But we live close and if we are staying for more than a weekend we can go home to shower, otherwise we just sponge bathe. They have just repaved the access road into the park so it is nice and smooth. they are usually right on top of cleaning the restrooms, and park is always kept up very nice. We camp in an older TT and we get cell phone coverage very well here. It's always a nice quiet place to camp, and meet new friends.

There website showed back in sites or at least 3 that were listed between 61-71 feet long, so we went in to check it out (we tow with an HDT and our overall length is 61'. We couldn't even make the turn into the campground so forunately were able to head further down to the boat ramp parking and get turned around on a loop. Shoul've checked it out on Google Maps first, but we were traveling and you know how that goes...
One more thing of importance, when you turn on Walnut Woods Drive the trees are not trimmed very good, In more than one spot tree limbs were scraping the roof pretty good. My solar panels probably saved the EDPM from damage! (Come on Iowa!)
*Definitely NOT big rig friendly! Looks like a great spot if you can get in....
As far as star rating I had to give it one and it reflects only our experience of not being able to get in! It looks like a beautiful spot to camp!
Upon arrival a couple of others helped guide me in. The park isn’t huge. It’s a nice cozy park. Very nice to have concrete slabs. Off peak time $11 for electric only and $14 for full hookups. Quiet place.

We are traveling musicians in a class B. This campground was very convenient as we had a gig in Wichita the next day. Arrived at sunset, found an open site. Off season, so no water was on in the shower house. Dump station was working, though. Inexpensive for an electric site overnight.

Great campground for passing through. The campground is just a couple of minutes from I35. Sites are concrete, fairly level, and easy to get in and out off. There is not much privacy.

There was 5” of snow on the ground and more coming. The campground had been plowed and half a dozen of the sites also. Water was off but still had electricity.

About 20 sites, a few cannot be reserved online and are first come sites. We arrived about 7pm on an August Monday and got the last site. Some electric, some full hook-ups. Dump station on site.

A serene natural setting that is also close to town. We had one of the few full hookup sites. They also have several electric only sites so be sure to watch for that when booking. There are generous cement pads in each site plenty of room for everything. There is a dump station at one end of the park which looks a little tight but we didn’t have to use it. We got all the Des Moines OTA stations using our TV antenna. The park was generally clean, although it looks like the previous tenants left some trash and a dirty sock in and around the firepit. Really enjoyed walking the road and paths inside the park, lots of pretty trees and birds chirping! As for noise we did here a couple airplanes each day and a train or two but they are very infrequent.
