Reviews
I needed a place to rest and rejuvenate after dealing with some serious health issues in my immediate family, and I found just what I was looking for at Elmwood 1820. I was there for two nights and can’t stop thinking about it.
John and Richard were wonderful hosts, warm, kind, and helpful (but not intrusive, as some Inn hosts tend to be). Richard makes these amazing biscuits, layer after layer of soft melt-in-your-mouth goodness. There was always a course of fresh fruit (one morning I was served a beautiful plate of skewered fruit - a cube of watermelon, a small basil leaf, and a dab of goat cheese, topped with a blueberry, yum!), and the main course was nothing short of artistic. For example, one morning the plate consisted of potato pancakes with Southern fried apples, a sharp cheddar stuffed crepe-style omelet, and thick-cut bacon. A symphony of flavors on a plate, and when it arrived the first thing my nose picked up was the sprig of fresh rosemary placed on top. When can I go back??
Other special touches of Elmwood are just as notable as the gourmet breakfasts. A huge front porch, fountains in the yard, vintage silver and china, interesting art from around the world, luxurious bedding (I am a sucker for a decadent bed), soft towels and robes in the bathroom, an open bottle of wine in the early evening (or liquor if that is your preference), and even a deck of cards in a sweet little wooden box sitting at the ready should a game of Solitaire become necessary.
The house is within walking distance of the main section of downtown Washington. I enjoyed an apricot iced tea from The Meeting Place Café while roaming in and out of the various shops, treated myself to some teeny-tiny cupcakes from Patty Cakes, had lunch at Rachel K’s Bakery (oh my goodness, THE FRESH BREAD!), and had a wonderful dinner at The Bank Bistro and Bar (neat place, it’s in the original Bank of Washington building; the bar is in the old vault).
In short, just go.
Wonderful B&B located in historic Washington NC. We were welcomed by the owner who helped us plan our activities during our stay. Our room was perfect and the bed quite comfortable. Breakfast was delishes. We enjoyed the entire stay.
