NO LONGER STANDING The Metropolitan State Hospital was an American public hospital for the mentally ill, located in the city of Waltham, Massachusetts. At one time the hospital was the largest and most modern facility of its type in Massachusetts. The Gaebler Children's Center for mentally ill youths was located on the grounds of the hospital. It was closed in January 1992 as a result of the state's cost-cutting policy of closing its mental hospitals and moving patients into private care. The Hospital's cemetery still rests on the grounds, maintained by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Gravestones are marked by number and religion, with but a few markings bearing names. In 1978, Metropolitan State patient Anne Marie Davee was murdered by another patient, Melvin W. Wilson.
Buildings are there people just live in them if you look really close they never tore down the buildings they left the shell and now used for condos been up there a few times one building left standing still creepy up there under ground tunnels still there
Also that photograph is of Bridgewater State Hospital in Bridgewater
I live in the area, buildings are no longer standing
Marker is dropped on the location of the Gaebler building. The larger adult center was a little NW and now houses condos. You can access the grounds via walking trails. There are signs posted on the trails and are open to the public.
