“A world famous truck stop”
Americas biggest and best truck stop!! When trucking was just a gleam in some of today’s drivers’ eyes and Interstate 80 was not yet completed, the Iowa 80 Truckstop was founded. In 1964, Standard Oil built and opened the truck stop, and in September 1965, Bill Moon took over management of the truckstop for Amoco. Like many of the truckstops in existence at the time, Iowa 80 was a small facility that only took up a fraction of what it does today, housing a small truckers store, one lube bay and a restaurant run by the Peel family. Under Mr. Moon’s keen management, the truckstop began to grow and in 1984 Bill Moon purchased the truckstop from Amoco, that like the industry itself, has been a flurry of activity and expansion ever since. Now that it was theirs, the Moon family was able to remodel, update and expand the restaurant and truckers store. The shop bays were closed to build state of the art private showers and a driver’s area, both of which were very rare in a truckstop at this time. In 1989, Iowa 80 added a new store probably most famous for, other than its chrome selection, the 1918 Oldsmobile hoisted above the cashier island. The Iowa 80 Truck Stop was featured on Food Paradise.
This place is great for people watching! They have a couple fast food options, including Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen and Caribou Coffee. They also have a large kitschy gift shop and an even larger trucker accessories store that is fun for even the non-trucker to wander. Restrooms are clean but busy. There is also a gas station with the standard gas station shop. They also have a movie theatre and other amenities that would appeal to truckers on the road.
As a truck stop to gas up this place is great. We have been there a few times on road trips and we always like stopping there. Seriously. You can watch a movie or get your teeth worked on!
Random stop for fuel me and car. Very pleasant place. Good food and stuff, nice people both staff and customers , tourists and truckers.
It's just a very big truckstop. Good place to gas up but I wouldn't consider it an attraction.
This random record breaker is visible from I-80. The best part might have been the random facts in the restroom but then I found out they were outdated. The largest bouquet of roses was actually 156k, not 101k as the sign said. Most expensive Barbie was $85,000 on the sign. A bunch of online sources show two Barbies more expensive. It's like knockoff versions of Best Buy, Hallmark, Starbucks and your local mall food court were all smushed together in this very unnecessarily large truck stop. I didn't stay long enough to explore the upstairs which may have been a game-changer... "Showers, theatre, barber, dentist, public laundry, chiropractor" I hope the next reviewer can touch on what THOSE offerings were like. I thought it was fun to explore just this once.
Oops.... Restaurants, not restraints.... LOL
I don't know what I was really expecting- thought it would be different than every other truck stop. Only difference is it's bigger. Same kind of restraints but more of them. Had pretty good prices for gas.
You walk into this huge room and then it leads into another huge room which leads into YET ANOTHER huge room. They sell everything here. Guitars, cheese curds, lots of souvenirs. I ate at the Iowa 80 kitchen. There’s a buffet but I got an omelette. With special hot sauce!
This was a pretty spectacular place to fill up. I think any roadtripper can appreciate all it has to offer. Got to play the "worlds largest pacman" in their arcade too!
Really neat place. We went very early in he morning and it was pretty empty. A lot of really cool stuff to see!
