Lake Anna State Park is a state park located in Spotsylvania County in Virginia. Initially the site of the Goodwin Gold Mine – gold was first discovered at the site in 1829 – the land later played host to Lake Anna, a reservoir created to serve as a coolant for Dominion Power's nearby nuclear power plant. It was created by damming up the North Anna River. Work to create the park began in 1972, and it opened formally in 1983.

Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on May 28, 2023We camped as a family in July 2013. We were there over the weekend and the campground was almost full. You may make a reservation online, but the specific spot is first come first serve. The campground is nicely laid out with nice camping spots in wooded areas. One side has water and electricity at each site. The other side is geared more for tents and did not have utilities at each site. There are also small cabins mixed in with the camp sites. Restrooms were clean but there are only two and some sites are quite a distance from them. Showers are included.
Camping fees for Virginia residents are $35/electric,water and $24 for dry camping. Fees for non-residents are $41/electric,water and $28/dry camping. (2015 rates.)
We attended two programs the state park offered. One was a trip to an old gold mine along with panning for gold in the creek. The second was kid focused fishing opportunity. Both had small fees associated with them. I would recommend both programs. There are wheelchair accessible fishing areas near the visitor center. The swimming area was a bit crowded with lots of day-use over the weekend. There are hiking trails and equestrian trails in the park.
The state park is along Lake Anna which is a large lake with a Dominion Power Nuclear Power Plant on it. It is a popular area for fishing and boating. There are other campgrounds and marinas on the lake as well as private homes. (We live approximately and hour away.)

While driving on the "blue highways" of central Virginia we found this lovely state park to spend the night. It is out in the countryside on Lake Anna. It's a short walk through the woods to the beach.
Since it was early April and during the week it was easy to find a campsite. The sites are spread out, but not a lot of vegetation between sites, so if you want more privacy, this might not be the place for you. Each site comes with a level gravel pad, and a place to put a tent. The bathrooms are newer and very clean.
We came off of RT 522, which is west of the state park and then followed our GPS via backroads to the entrance. There is no signage indicating a state park from this direction, so if you don't have a GPS, you might not find it. We were told there is signage if you come from the east.

I was here at the end of the season - had the place almost all to myself. :-) Sites look level (mine was) and nicely spaced though not very private. The walk to the lake was about 10 minutes. There are several trails to explore. Bathrooms are fine (though the one in my loop was closed for maintenance). Verizon signal was weak. I reckon in season this place is hopping. There's a nice beach area for swimming. And there was a structure made for kids and handicapped folks to fish from. What little staff I ran into was friendly.

Our reservation packet was ready for us on arrival at the welcome station.
There were only 3-4 other campers there for the 2 nights we were there, which is the nice thing about mid-week in October.
There was a single bath house that included a laundry. Everything was well maintained and very clean.
Almost all sites were seperated by a small stand of trees, so pretty good privacy.
Most sites were back in, only one drive thru as I recall. 2 sites were situated in a buddy site configuration. The sites were very large and had a fairly level gravel RV parking spot.
The park has a huge marina, large sand beach and picknic faciliy area near the lake, which is only a short drive/ride from the campsites.
I64 is about 30 minutes due south of the park and I95 is about 40 minutes due east.
A gas station was within 5 minutes of the park entrance and there were major grogery stores in the nearby town of Louisa.
Area has numerous civil war sites nearby.
The $101.88 total cost for the 2 nights included a $5 transaction fee and $4.88 in taxes.

It was raining all weekend, but the big, spacious site had ample gravel to drain water away. There is lots of space between sites and campers were quiet and respectful. Beach area is 15 minute walk from campsites and very kid friendly. Only downside from trip was that the dump station is closed (long term) due to the collapse of their septic drain field. So we had to trek to nearby campground on Sunday and pay $20 to empty tanks. Sounds like it may take some time before that’s repaired.

Great park with lake access and hiking trails. Our site was spacious and quiet, and all sites were well organized so you’re not on top of other campers. Early March so with the colder weather the campground was busy, but very quiet.

Have waited six months into our RV life to start reviews for fair comparisons. Spent two nights. Nice site backing into the woods and the leaves were changing. Great hiking and biking from the campground. Love having the access to the lake. Great areas for dog walking. Family next door was really loud, but not the campgrounds fault.

First, we are more "mountain campers" than "lake campers". A campground on a big lake is not where we would normally choose. But, Lake Anna State Park was a good base of operations for visiting the big Civil War battlefields in the area--Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania. Even though it's 30-40 minutes away from the battlefields, it is the closest major public campground. And, the park is not close to much of anything else. Although Memorial Day weekend was wet and cool, we enjoyed our experience overall.
We stayed in site 38 (E/W), which is non site-specific. This may be the best site in the campground. A neighbor on only one side, not close, and woods to the other side and behind. Actually, we didn't see any bad sites--almost all are large with decent privacy. So I'd rate the park highly in that regard. It seems there are too few bath/shower facilities for the size of the campground, and the men's facilities were not clean while we were there. There are several miles of trails in the park.
If you're "lake campers" or want to tour the nearby battlefields, I highly recommend this park.

Think of this park like a smaller and quieter version of Smith Mountain Lake SP. Same amenities such as boat in restaurants and plenty of put in locations. Great trail system and plenty if sites. Privacy could be better between sites, but it wasn't too bad.
