“An Old mining town that's still running”
Silver was discovered here in 1900, which sparked one of the biggest mining booms in the state. Many of the town's buildings, such as the Mizpah Hotel and the Nye County Courthouse, were built in the early 20th century. The Tonopah Historic Mining Park, on the hillside above the town, offers a chance to explore the actual mines that created this mining juggernaut. Tonopah's Central Nevada Museum contains displays describing not only local mining history but also other cultural and social aspects of the region. Located about halfway between Reno and Las Vegas, Tonopah is a perfect place to stay while enjoying central Nevada's recreational activities including rock hunting, hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, off·roading and hunting. Our rich history, which includes mining, ranching and pioneer life, the influence of the Western Shoshone, who were here before us, is presented in our state-of-the-art museum. In addition, we explore and present the geology and plant life of this region.
