The campground was closing at the end of October so Q-dog and I were almost the only ones here, just how we like it. So of course I loved it. Site #34 good but if crowded perhaps site #35. Didn't need reservations at that time of year. There is also camping at a back loop that looked nice. Hiking trails from the campground around Blue Heron loop and the Catawaba Overlook.
There is also an old mining community nearby and in fact will pass on the Blue Heron loop. A daily train arrives with visitors so its fun to hear the train whistle.
I don't always keep track of internet connectivity but in my notes, I have stated no internet. That would have been in 2013.

The campground has 47 W&E sites which are paved and mostly level. There is a dump, 3 bars of LTE, free firewood in every site and the PBS and the CW channel.

This campground is located on high ground in the forest. Two loops host sites with electricity and water. A dump station is available. The sites on the outside of the loops are pretty well spaced, but the interior sites are wide open and close.
A toilet building has showers for no additional fee.
Trails lead off to interesting places but we encountered rain so we stayed in camp.
The camp is well maintained. For some unknown reason, the lowest numbered sites are marked closed.

Quiet and secluded on top of a mountain. Loved it. The back loop would be great if you don’t have neighbors but they are close. The rest of the sites seemed spacious enough. Had to tie down the handle on the water to keep it on. Road in is windy and narrow but doable. There was a MH in the host spot but we never saw anyone. Lots to do in the area. Check out the old Blue Heron mining camp. Overall a great place to relax.

What a wonderful place sitting 1/2 mile back off the roadway. Very quiet, except for weekend when kids are around, which is a delight to hear, but during week, it's pretty quiet. Lot's of birds to hear and wind swishing through the trees. You see an occasional turkey meander thru in the mornings and there are Bear boxes at each site, if tent camping, to protect your food, just in case a bear does drop by.
Sites are pretty level and have tons of space to enjoy the great outdoors. Each site has electric, water, a fire pit, picnic table and Bear box, all resting upon a gravel base framed in by PT wood. Plus we love that they have recycling bins! Nicely done NPS and Blue Heron staff!
You have the freedom, at this time, to go and gather whatever wood you want to build a fire. It has to be down, so no cutting it down to get it. There are also places in Stearns to buy firewood if you need.
Since it is a bit of a distance from Stearns (about 7 miles), be sure to have all your essentials before you head there. Once here, enjoy your stay, however long that may be, we did and loved it!
Hats off to "Wandering Pulse" for the great pictures! It really tells the story of the place.

Stayed at Blue Heron Campground for an long girls weekend. We had a great spot (number 29) nearby the bath house.
The campground was nicely kept, even though the sites seemed fairly close to one another. We appreciated the bear boxes for our outside kitchen items.
We had some trouble with the electrical box, but the office sent an electrician over. Which we were very grateful for since it was Friday night. He got it fixed up for us, Wayne was awesome!
The bath house was clean and well maintained.
We had a great time here, and look forward to coming back again!

Stayed here while I fished and visited the sites. Newly paved roads in the area, finished while I was here. Saw an owl fly across the road on the way in! Beware of copperheads. Saw one dead and one of those also crossed the road in front of me not far from the campground.
Water spirits are a bit odd. Otherwise the site was roomy, fairly level, and nice.
Cell service was good enough for me to work on AT&T. Also streamed a movie at night on Verizon.

35 ft travel trailer fit easily and we really enjoyed heated bathrooms and showers! (some cold weather) Hiking trails start a half mile from the campground, but were interesting and well-kept. Overlooks, outdoor mining museum. We mostly had the whole campground to ourselves during the week but it was never actually busy. The road is in windy and has some steep inclines, but even big rigs seem to do OK. Great cell service - verizon.
