“13,050 Acres of Awesomeness”
Ricketts Glen harbors Glens Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark. Take the Falls Trail and explore the Glens, which boasts a series of wild, free-flowing waterfalls, each cascading through rock-strewn clefts in this ancient hillside. The 94-foot Ganoga Falls is the highest of 22 named waterfalls. Old growth timber and diverse wildlife add to the scenic area. Ricketts Glen State Park is one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania. This large park is comprised of 13,050 acres in Luzerne, Sullivan and Columbia counties. Natural wetlands, old growth forests and majestic geological formations, which helped produce 22 beautiful waterfalls, make Ricketts Glen an excellent choice for outdoor studies. From March to November, the environmental education specialist conducts hands-on activities, guided walks and presentations on the natural and historical resources for school groups, scouts, civic organizations and the general public. Call in advance to set up a program that will enhance your classroom or group studies. Campers and visitors may check the bulletin boards and at the park office for listings of weekend programs and nature hikes.
Camped here a couple weekends ago and it was an awesome experience! You can bring your kayak right up to your campsite from the lake if you have the right site. Early in the morning we hiked to be alone in the waterfalls. Unforgettable!!
My mom used to hike the Falls Trail with me strapped to her back. Now I have man legs that carry me along quite well and over the years, I've been to Ricketts countless times. This was my gateway park (if that's a thing) and kicked off my interests in hiking and backpacking.
Beautiful? Only in every season. Majestic? Is spotting a solitary bald eagle from a kayak in Lake Jean majestic? Unfortunately, the lake is currently drained (Summer 2015), but the waterfalls are still in full swing and the Falls Trail is still the perfect loop for a quick day hike.
Worth the trip! Beautiful hikes!
Beautiful place and nicely managed trails.
Great local place to hike
