“Abraham Lincoln's home from 1844-1861”
Abraham Lincoln believed in the ideal that everyone in America should have the opportunity to improve their economic and social condition. Lincoln’s life was the embodiment of that idea. We know him as the sixteenth president but he was also a spouse, parent, and neighbor who experienced the same hopes, dreams, and challenges of life that are still experienced by many people today.
One of 3 big highlights to Springfield. The other two also being Lincoln related. The whole street is like a page out of 1860. If you travel to Springfield then make sure you go here and maybe even have a little picnic. Street parking is free on the weekends which is also a bonus
Very cool little piece of history. Really fun to walk the same streets you know President Lincoln walked while doing his daily routine and what not.
We read a book on Abe Lincoln with the kids so they knew who is was. We made this stop and the kids really enjoyed the "town". They were able to answer a few questions since we just finished the book on Abe. We were traveling with our dog and everyone was so friendly. Although he was not allowed in the buildings he was welcome to walk around outside. One volunteered went inside and brought out some fresh water for him.
Between this stop and the Lincoln Museum and Library we would vote this the better of the two. The NPS never disappoints as far as accurate national landmarks. Walking the boardwalk sidewalks and touring the reconstructed homes from the Lincoln's time in Springfield is awe inspiring. Turning a side street in almost downtown Springfield IL into the historic time of Lincoln is just hands down neat to experience. Plan much more time here to leisurely walk the streets and tour the houses than you give the Library or Museum. You'll love it here!
Free admission (pay for parking or find near by street parking) and great tours of Lincoln’s home and neighborhood. Beautiful and moving
One of the best historical sites to stop and see. There was a costumed Abe when I stopped. With a preserved neighborhood, you get a great feel for what it was like in Lincoln’s day. The guides are awesome, and very knowledgeable. Absolutely worth it!
We stopped here for 20 minutes(jam packed road trip) but it was well worth it! It is so interesting to see the little town that essentially still exists thanks to the National (or State?) Parks and volunteers. The streets still have rocks that made up the streets years ago, the sidewalks are made of wooden planks, and the architecture is beautiful! Great for even just a quick, unguided tour!
The tour is about 25 minutes, but it offers a great deal and is worth every penny. Such a cool tour that gives you a pretty accurate depiction of how Abe and his family lived. To be exact, the house and furnishings are 85% accurate to how it was when Abe and his family lived in the home.
Nicely preserved historic site. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The kids were excited to get their National Park passports stamped.
Went about 8 yrs ago. The tour wasn't very long. Nice to see all inside the home and to be taken back in time.
